Hi there. I am new to Kubuntu. Of course I tried it before, but I have always been using Ubuntu. Recently, I decided to move to Kubuntu because I prefer its Wacom configuration tool over Ubuntu's, and because of my ability to tweak many aspects of it for my convenience.
Today, I was trying to print something using a USB printer, not a network one. Under Ubuntu, this was very easy. With almost all of the printers I used, I only needed to plug it in, and done; I can start printing right away. However, this is not the case with Kubuntu. I tried two different printers today, both are HP, with no success at all. The KDE's printer configuration tool doesn't recognize my printer, although I can find it with lsusb in Konsole. How can I solve this??? |

Hi Abdelrahman,
odd... Have you tried installing hplip-gui? HPs config tool should sort you out. If you still have problems try some of the command line tools that come with it such as hp-check, hp-config_usb_printer, etc. If you still don't manage to get your kubuntu to speak with your printer please let us have further details such as which model you have and the output of hp-check. Best of luck!

Thanks toad.. I will try this solution when I arrive tomorrow at work.
As I understand, this will sort out the problem with HP printers.. but what about other models... will I suffer from such a problem as well?? Or this is something that we cannot predict. Thank you very much |

If it is at work you could have an old PC on Ubuntu (although I don't the difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu here...) sharing the printer via the network

The problem is I am the only one using Linux at work. This is something. Also, I need to work this out in case I need to add any other printer. I am too; I don't understand what's the difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu that casues this problem.

Hi toad.. I tried hplip-gui... it worked with one of the printers.. a "LaserJet Professional P1102" one.. However, the other printer, "LaserJet Pro 400", has smart install enabled, and the gui could not, for some reason, disable it.
This works for HP printers. But, how can I work this out with the other models |

Not being in the habit of installing loads of different printers I am not entirely sure to tell you the truth... I can only suggest checking with the Kubuntu people over at www.kubuntuforums.net - they may know about the difference in behaviour between Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
