Kwallet

Wed Nov 05, 2014 12:52 pm
While connecting to the Internet kwallet usually starts and asks for a password.

Recently, it has not appeared.

I ran kwalletmanager and I received the following message:

file://home/andrew/usr/share/doc/kwalletmanager does not exist.

However, using Dolphin I find that kwalletmanger exists under
Root/usr/share/doc/kwalletmanager

Advice please

Ps. When I receive the 'does not exist' message, the system freezes, but I can use FF if it open at the time the message appears.

More information:

I tried running kwalletmanager from the command line. I could not find any man entries, so I guessed the commands. I give the output below:

andrew@andrew-Dell-DM061:~$ kwalletmanager
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.

I could not find what was causing the problem so I have uninstalled Kwallet manager.

I note that there are still a number of files in my home directory that relate to kwallet, should I delete these manually?

KWallet itself and KWalletManager are separate, so I would advise against removing the files in your home directory. KWallet Manager simply allows you to access and manually update details within your wallets - KWallet itself operates fine without it.

Thanks for responding.

Are you saying that kwallet is still installed, eventhough I uninstalled kwalletmanager. I can't find it!

Any idea why I received the message below when the walletmanager was installed

file://home/andrew/usr/share/doc/kwalletmanager does not exist.

/home/andrew are there, but /usr etc is in root not home!

Yes, KWallet itself will still be installed - as it is comprised of just a service to interact with applications (which includes KWalletManager) and store the information it is given in wallets.

I'm not sure why you would be seeing that message. Did it appear as a popup, or as something else?

How can I view the wallet. I can't find it?

The message relating to file not found occured after I activated the kwalletmanager. It appeared as a small window in the middle of the screen.

Not being able to solve the problem I uninstalled the kwalletmanager.

the kwalletmanager service file or your installation is screwed - it apparently tries to launch a binary from "/home/andrew/usr/share/doc/" which is not only a document path, but also wrong (would be /usr/share/doc/kde/html/<LC>/kwalletmanager, "<LC>" being your language code) and weird (~/usr/share ...)

If the path is not found in the service file, there's something really broken in the entire user configuration, expect more issues.

There should be not "freeze", but I could assume the client which calls kwallet (firefox?) does so synchronously and grabs the mouse around (in case: "d'oohhh!")

QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.

That's the correct command, you can (for the moment) ignore the warnings that show up in return.
KWalletManager should show up a window or in systray afterwards (unless it's running already, check the output of "ps ax | grep kwallet")

Where did you install kwalletmanager from? Stock repo or some PPA (and which version in particular)?

Kwallet manager used to work well, and then one day I recieved that message.

There are no other issues, and the system is working well.

I can't remember which version of wallet or walletmanager.

It was originally installed as part of kubuntu suite.

I downloaded the iso file (12,04.4 LTS) from the kubuntu site, as I recall. Again, as I recall the md5 checked. I only download from official sites.

The wallet and manager worked.

Later I received notification that an OS upgrade was available and I upgrded online to 14.04, again from the official site. Again the wallet etc worked well.

I often get system update messages, and things work well after updates.

One day (recently) I recieved that file not found message.

I couldn't find a solution, so I uninstalled kwalletmanager. There are still files in the .kde folder. I intend to leave them.

I can give no further information

Is there still a problem here which needs to be resolved, or is this issue now solved?

I uninstalled kwallet some time ago.

It did not work for me, despite my attempts to obtain functionality.

I regard it as a problem, hence the uninstall. I don't regard uninstallation as a resolution.

To eliminate the possibility it was caused by bad user configuration - could you try a new user account and see if it happens there?

In System Settings, open User Manager and use that to create a new user account.
Then logout of your current user and into the newly created user and try to reproduce the behaviour you previously experienced with KWallet there.

If you can reproduce it - the problem is with your system. If it is not, then the problem is within your user account and the configuration files it contains.
