Why doesn't Dolphin keep Devices Tree straight?
I arrang devices and hide the ones I do not wish to see. Then after rebooting I get hidden partitions showing again and arrangement is all wrong. What's the point of the ability to arrange and hide devices when it doesn't work? Something I'm not aware of? A Bug? As been a long time problem and finally remembered to post about it. And same issue across Ubuntu based,Debian & Manjaro Arch KDE editions. Any help is greatly appreciated on this issue. . |

this is controlled by file ~/.kde[4]/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml
when you toggle show/hide does the file also change? it should not exactly sure how the file works as the 2 devices I tested with each had multiple entries (3) fyi - it does work as expected for me |

Well looks like I'm not the only one. And looks like nobody has an answer?
As a known issue or bug? Or that a fix is available? . |

did you misread my response "fyi - it does work as expected for me" or are you referring to someone else? |

Thought you said " 2 devices I tested with each had multiple entries (3)" which is normal? And you can arrange and hide partitions in device tree and they stick between booting? . |

I hide 2 devices and show 1, been doing this for a long time with no issues between boots so for me this has always functioned properly
I'm not familiar with the bookmarks.xml file so no idea if the 3 entries is normal or not, in your copy does each device have multiple entries? 2 things to try: 1) as a new user does it work correctly 2) open the bookmarks.xml file in Kate Kate should (at least in my config) notify that the file was changed with a popup then change show/hide of a device in Dolphin - does the change get picked up in Kate? |

Is it possible that the unique identifiers for your storage devices are changing regularly?

Hmmm don't think so as listed 3 internal partitions and 2 external usb that never get unplugged from system. And always mounted on startup. And just noticed they are correct as booted up an hour ago and the are set the way I had them setup except the 320gb & 697gb swapped positions. So not always but from time to time they get scrambled on what is hidden and how they are stack. Will have to keep an eye on them. And pay attention if they lose their order when I'm plugging in my Nook Color tablet for recharging or putting books on. Then unplugging it somehow changes the order on next re-boot. . |

One way of testing this would be to rearrange the devices, then to close and reopen Dolphin.

Arrangement and what is hidden stays right whether I open close dolphin or logging out back in. misbehaving is on restart/cold boot up. So harder to determine if it's a Dolphin thing? Or something lower level like systemd? Fuse? being Ntfs partions or something else? Not a biggie just trying to determine where the bug is coming from. . |

It is probably the respawning of UDisks in this case which is causing the issue. I suspect NTFS partitions won't have a UUID or something along those lines, so UDisks generates one when the partition is mounted. As Dolphin likely relies on these identifiers to sort partitions, the sorting is lost when the system is rebooted - as the partitions are remounted and UDisks respawned - resulting in new identifiers.
I'm not sure if there is anything we can do for you in this case unfortunately.
