KDE, Debian and Java terminal application

Hi there,

I'm helping a friend at work to get his workstation up. We all use an in-house terminal application quite heavily. We all use some variation of Linux and it's working as intended. When my friend was reinstalling his workstation, I suggested KDE under latest stable Debian release (apt-get install kde-full) -- not because I use KDE myself, but from what I've seen it is quite user friendly (I build my system very differently, but still using Debian). We got things up and running without too much hassle -- looks great and easy to use for someone that doesn't enjoy too much tinkering. However, this java based terminal application doesn't execute as it does on all other systems. It opens up in a new (additional) terminal window, no matter what terminal we try to start it in. I can only assume that KDE has a play in this. I tried to google a lot and did some searching on this forum with little luck (granted, this is probably considered a very specific issue).

My question is if anyone knows why it opens up in a new, different terminal window -- or better yet -- a solution to the problem. We just wish for this java application to start up in the same terminal it is executed from, as it does everywhere else.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some questions:
Which environment and terminal emulator (gnome-terminal/xterm/etc.) were you using before?
How is this application launched? Is it a command-line application that you run from an open terminal window (using java -jar path/to/MyApp.jar), or do you have a RunMyApp.desktop application shortcut which is set up to run the application?

I would expect that this being a command-line application, unless you have something in your java code which requests a new terminal window it should just use the current terminal window for all (console) IO. If you have some kind of an application shortcut, I would expect it to launch in a new window every time, regardless of environment or terminal emulator in question.

Well, I'm using it in debian/urxvt/awesomewm, another colleague uses Ubuntu desktop with xterm and it runs perfectly in putty as well. I've never seen anything like this happen with this application and I've seen the application run on many different systems. It's opened just by a command, java -jar theapp.jar.

And yes, I agree with what you're saying, hence why I'm so confused. :p

It was a local issue and had nothing to do with KDE, thankfully. Also, as this is regarding an in house application, I feel there's no point in sharing the solution. Thanks anyway for any attempts to help out. :)
