Hello,
I recently updated almost all my computers to a new Kubuntu installation. I have only 64-bit laptops and desktops. This is the Linux version I have: Linux rysiek-Vostro-220-Series 3.19.0-30-generic #34-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 2 22:08:41 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Fast powerful computers seem to be fine in terms of speed, but some older computers have become sluggish and it has become really annoying. Here are the problems I am experiencing (I would like to stress the previous desktop version did not give me any issues, even slower computers could easily cope). 1) when starting applications it takes a lot of time to run 2) when I try to minimize a window it takes almost 30 seconds for this simple operation and the screen is blinking - this is horrible 3) running .mp4 movies in VLC has become impossible. I start a movie and it shows a black screen, I have to use other Media players I don't like. 4) running Firefox sometime becomes impossible, other browsers are also affected, for example I can open some pages in another tab and the program goes to a complete freeze. I tried switching off some of the background services like the printer process, but that does not help. These are my applications running in top:
Is there any clear reason why the new KDE desktop could be so slow? Regards, Richlion

wrong/no graphics driver resulting in GL software emulation?
check /var/log/Xorg.0.log the top dump you posted does not indicate memory/cpu overload. |

Hi,
the last part of the x-org.log does indicate any errors, at the beginning some, but then pretty much clear.
There may be something at the beggining of the log:
When I check the device manager settings this is what I have (Recognized by Ubuntu): Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. AMD/ATI Caicos Radeon HD 6450/7450/845/ R5 230 OEM Then UBUNTU has set to the recommended driver "using X-Org server -- AMD/ATI display driver wrapper from xserver-xorg-video-ati" |
|
It loads the radeon driver, unless there's an error about the inability to access DRI, that's fine.
Check the output of "glxinfo", if that's not suspicious, just try to suspend the compositor (SHIFT+Alt+F12) and see whether that accelerates some things (and this is about the GL acceleration at all) |

I searched a bit more and came across this link:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/141606/ ... mode-error I suspected that the graphics driver is not correctly installed with this new Kubuntu release, so I ran this:
I rebooted my machine and now everyting seems to be normal. I will have to try the same with my Nvidia drivers on my HP laptops, probably the same issue. The system is now showing as using a different driver "Using Video drive for the AMD graphics accelerator from fglrx" I think this solves the problems. Thanks for responding. Richlion |
