Thanks for your help. I'm going to give Mate a try. KDE is very nice, and I might come back, but KDE does (simultaneously) too little and way too much.

Too little: Too little menu -- even the Classic Menu is just an application launcher, not really a menu.

Too much: Too much things flying around and jumping out and too many disparate behaviors (depending on whether in a system tool or in an application). As with all Linux distros, there's a lot of inconsistency. I could live with that, but I'm going to try Mate.

I wish Linux Devs would stop trying to anticipate what people want to do with computers and instead just supply a set of tools with which users can make their own interface. I crowd funded a tablet PC from Finland that was to run Sailfish and that could be almost completely configured by scripts, but I lost my $200+ investment. Ah, well. Certainly Microsoft doesn't have a clue. I'd go for Google, but I don't want to be spied upon.
