My Kate file dialog only shows my home directory and computer in the left pane. All the other file dialogs on my system show what is set up in Dolphin, in my case "Places". Places has home, root, network and several bookmarked folders. Kate doesn't show any of those, just computer root and my user home.
I can't find any settings to alter the file dialog in Kate. At this point it's less convenient than GTK file dialogs. |

I just checked, it does the same for a new user. It doesn't have the settings from Dolphin, it just has Computer and my User. Version 16.04.1 Using: KDE Frameworks 5.22.0 Qt 5.5.1 (built against 5.5.1) The xcb windowing system |

can you post a pic (the forum doesn't host pics you need to use a 3rd party host site and post the link)
I'm confused because I don't have anything like "computer root and my user home." what version of Kate? |

Version 16.04.1 Here's the Kate file open dialog next to Dolphin. All my other KDE apps' file dialog's have the same left panel as Dolphin. ![]() |

thanks for the pic,
it definitely not the KDE file open dialog Looks like you are using the Qt File Dialog instead of the KDE one, see https://www.google.com/search?q=kde+ope ... smFN1NM%3A for examples if you open Kate in Konsole are there any QT messages displayed? if you have the qt5ct package installed it could be overriding the dialog ps - I only know this because qt5ct screwed up my decorations and a lucky Google query |

I searched for everything with qt5 and couldn't find anything with qt5ct or qt5 configuration tool. I'm pretty sure I don't have that package. The only error running Kate from the terminal was a samba warning that some of my share names aren't compatible with older windows and versions of samba. It's so frustrating. I'm so used to my bookmarked places, even GTK dialogs let me bookmark folders. I could live with it being different than Dolphin, but there's no facility to add bookmarks, it doesn't remember recent folders either. |

what distribution?
suggest you open new thread, something like "Kate uses QT file dialog not KDE's" |

another reason you would get this is if you were running a KDE 4 app under Plasma 5 or a KDE 5 app under Plasma 4

Same problem here. VERY problematic because you can't even edit the path in the "File Open" dialog, or use the KIO slave to access remote files (fish://me@example.com/home/)
kate --version kate 15.12.3 (from synaptic: Kate Version 4:15.12.3-0ubuntu2) Kate Part 5.18.0 Using: KDE Frameworks 5.18.0 Qt 5.5.1 (built against 5.5.1) The xcb windowing system lsb_release -a Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS Release: 16.04 Codename: xenial The only workaround I've found is to use Konqueror to browse the filesystem, and then use the right-click context menu to open the file with Kate. Note that installing Kubuntu-desktop and/or Plasma instead of Unity does NOT fix the problem with Kate. Perhaps this is a problem of "Kate 4 on top of KDE 5" -- I don't know because I'm not a KDE dev |
