I find the search function for Dolphin and plasma search to be very sparse in the results it gets. It doesn't keep track of recent documents very well either. It doesn't appear to search all my Home directory or subdirectories of it. It also seems very sporadic in whether or not it actually fetches the files I want. Is the file search functionality just bad in KDE or is there a way to improve it? I have Plasma 5.7.5.

I just came here to post the same thing and then I found you already have. I can see a file in a folder and when I try to search that file it doesn't show. I really like Dolphin and this is how FM should look like but search is the only thing what I miss from Nautilus. It is KDE Mint 18, Plasma 5.6.5., Frameworks 5.23.0, Qt 5.5.1. I installed Recoll but it's iinconvenient to have separate search app.

Look here https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=289&t=126941

If you're on a laptop and on battery, no search runs. Just turn on you charger and run balooctl status and you will see increasing your index number ;)
