Konqueror software regression?

Wed May 31, 2017 11:45 am
Hi all,

First of all, perhaps I'm wrong, I'm not yet familiar enough with Dolphin and Krusader to be sure but...

(and please apologize if my tone seems rough, I'm not a natural English spoker, I don't mean to be rude, jsut to explain what and why I consider them a lost, a regression)

Until 16.08.3 Konqueror supported profiles and more specifically the "filemanagement" profile. With 16.12.3 it seems this behaviour as been removed, which is to me a regression.

Konqueror as file manager has competitors with Dolphin and Krusader. None of them seems able to reproduce the "filemanagement" profile's behaviour.

With Krusader I can have two panels but they are independent: the left panel is the same as the right one: they display the whole content of some folder, including files.
With Dolphin the behaviour of the left panel is more like the one from Konqueror using fileManagement profile (accessible with "kfmclient openProfile filemanagement"): the left panel shows only folders, no files, and when clicking on one folder in the left panel the content of that folder is displayed into the right panel.

Unfortunately the Dolphin's left panel is missing some features:
- it always shows the whole system tree, no way to show only user's home folder. This is a great lost: not everybody is sysadmin, in fact most of them are not, most of them have nothing to do any elsewhere than into their home directory. So with bugging them with the whole system tree? My Mom who will be 68 in a week has enough difficulties (I insist on the plural form of difficulty) managing her files without showing her the whole tree. That's a non-sense. And Mom's are numerous, I met lot of users in my work who have less knowledge of computer management than my mother, people with the same difficulties, or even more.
- "open with" does not show up in contextual menu of left panel. Why this has been removed, I'm wondering. Was it giving too much facilities to users?
- a great features appeared lately in Konqueror left panel when used as file manager: the total impossibility to drag and drop folders in left panel. This seems nothing. Almost useless. Even bothering. Until you met someone at work who accidentally moved one folder into another when a lot of people were working into the moved folder... each and every user can't use that folder anymore, getting error message like "destination folder does not exist", rising incidents, complaining...

Internet search shown me I'm not the only one thinking this is a lost of great features of some KDE product as others users are complaining about these to be removed, fighting their system to get back to older KDE versions.

Some people took time to develop these features which makes me think some developers liked them, as me, as other complaining users.

I know most of others file manager don't have these features but what's the goal of KDE products evolution? Is it to follow others or is it to get something great?

Am I missing something in my KDE configuration? Do I need some other software?

Please help me to get back to that really fantastic file manager KDE was used to provide rather a dumb copy of others file managers. I mean they are numerous and mostly they are working like Krusader or Dolphin. None of those I tested (and I tested quite a lot) was as good as what provided Konqueror with filemanagement profile.

Hoping I haven't been disagreeable,

Hi,

as far as I can tell many features were removed last year in Konqueror during the transition to KDE 5. There are not many developers taking care of it and better have an application with reduced functionality than non available at all.

You will get more attention if you create (or vote for already existing) bug reports (one for each issue) on https://bugs.kde.org. I cannot confirm the "open with" problem. Looks like a bug. And for the cut file tree you can also create a bug report for Krusader - maybe it's easy to do and I have time to implement it.

For Konqueror: https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=konqueror
And: https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=krusader

Update:

I really liked the idea about cutting the file tree from the closest places path and implemented this in Krusader. Will be available with the next release.
