Changing Passwords

Fri Aug 04, 2017 8:44 am
Hi,

I guess it is good practice that one changes login passwords every now and then. Unforatunately, KDE makes this taks as akward as it usually feels when you start the procedure because you can feel from the very beginning that there will be problems ahead. Anway, I still tried ... and yes of course there were probelms where I could fix all of them but one which is the reason for this post. The problem might be due to the fact that I used passwd to change the password in the first place and only later try to reset the password with the KDE dialogue to see whether I could fix all issues, though with no success. At least I would argue that it should be allowed to change the password with passwd and yes, there should be a way to do fixes that everything works again as one used to know it and of course I am sure that there is a fix for my problem but I do not see how it should work.

So what is the problem, here you go: When I login the Kwallet always asks for a separate password. So while before the Kwallet was happy with using the login password it is now no longer happy with it, although I changed the password of Kwallet to match the login password.

Unfortuantely, I do not find an option in the Kwallet setting to allow the login process to open the wallet.

In my opion it should be easy for a user to change the login password without much hassle. For KDE and especially Kwallet this is unfortunately not the case.

Cheers,

Klaus

A quick duckduckgo "change kwallet password" brought up a number of wikis explaining how to do it. I suggest you look there and let us know if you encounter further problems.

HTH.

The problem was actually not in kwallet but in messed up settings of the whole machine (which I was not aware of because I did not install the machine).

However, from this experience I learned that the keyboard layout for the login of plasma is not linked to the keyboard layout set by an individual user. Which among other problems, at least as far as I remember, can lead to the fact a user sets a password internally and thinks that everything is fine, realize that he or she cannot login anymore if layout sensitive keys are involved.

To help users to at least more easily realize this problem, a button to visualize the entered password on the login screen would be more than helpful. Unfortunatley, such a button does as far as I can see not exist ...

Nope, it doesn't and yes, I feel your pain having suffered a similar fate ;)
