On gnome, gvfs mounts samba shares on /var/run/somewhere and you can go there and see the files in a regular folder structure and not the smb:// prefixed one with the network specific treatment. This was very useful to navigate the share using midnight commander and other utilities that didn't recognize the network share as implemented by gnome for one reason or another. Is there an equivalent place for KIO? I've been looking but haven't been able to find anything remotely similar yet. Hopefully there is.

KIO (as of yet) doesn't provide mount points for the services it provides. It just implements the protocols needed to implement network transparency similar to gvfs.
There is a proposal to update KIO to provide mount points: viewtopic.php?f=83&t=141917
