vaults & cpu

Thu Apr 25, 2019 8:34 am
i find almost nothing related to one of the most innovative kde - features in the forum: vaults.

problem: when i open a vault, my computer is almost about to explode. the cryFS process causes cpu (& fan) to rise massively (~ 40%) and constantly until the vault is closed again. it would be cool if this process - despite encryption and the associated computing power - used a little less resources.

edit a : partial cpu / fan - improvement per different encryption (non-standard-setting).

edit b : i changed the swappiness value from 60 to 10. with 8gb ram, that shouldn't be a problem. and indeed, when i opened the vaults, the system stayed "cool & quiet".

edit c : 1 hour after trying to change swappiness from 60 to 10, the fan is running all the time. no matter if vaults are open or not. without stopping. trigger: a single higher cpu / ram - load (browser, youtube video).

quotes, reddit - discussion :

You need to point out that the RAM which is NOT occupied by running programs is used as disk cache... so, by decreasing swappiness, you increase the chance of a program not to be swapped out, but at the same time decrease the size of disk cache, which can make disk access slower. So the effects of this setting on the actual performance are not that straightforward... you're welcome to experiment of course but I suspect the defaults are set by people who understand enough in the subject :) – Sergey Feb 14 '12 at 0:42

@Sergey and the irony of it is that those with small RAM are most likely to try every trick they can come across to boost performance and are more likely to be the people for whom 60 or even higher would be the best figure. Those of us setting it to 10 because we've tonnes of RAM aren't gaining as much as they'll lose if they do so. – Jon Hanna Aug 7 '12 at 1:35

back again on 60. silence again (after some minutes auf cpu / ram - increase through various applications).
