I am not a programmer but use Kate extensively as my primary text editor in Linux Mint.

I would like to standardize the color scheme to be the same whatever I edit. On a rare occasion, I modify some bash or javascript code, but component color coding is not necessary for the task. Besides, their different color schemes are distracting and not helping under the circumstances. However, I find the color text to be pleasing, but not different from document to document. How can I implement this? I use the solarized dark theme and looked at my exported kateschema and katehicolor files, but I am lost.

You can customize the colours in the Profile and of course also make different profiles.

Some weeks ago, I installed Kate in both Windows 10 and Linux Mint, hoping to use a single text editor in both.

Spent the last weeks studying both versions and searched the Kate documentation but there is no information on how to configure Kate to use a single universal colour setting for everything and ignore the document type being edited. (which is wrong in any case, javascript is recognized as a Mediawiki Markup) .

In the context of my work, when I must make minor script modification, the color highlights are confusing for a non-programmer. Not only is Kate wrong in guessing the document being edited, but it's irrelevant.

Can you please help?

Why don't you just use the default normal mode? Or make yourself a different Profile? It is all in the settings, do you really need holding hands to change the settings of your application through the menu?

I don't want my hand held, it's just that we Canadians are slow on the uptake in the hot summer. But, I also can't help feeling that you would rather be occupied with something else than providing support.

To make your life easier — and mine more adventurous, please provide a one word 'yes/no' answer to the following questions, and I will do the legwork. These questions came up in Linux Mint 20.0 Cinnamon so far, but my gut feeling is that there will be others.

1. Is it possible to increase the tab length to more than 16 characters?
2. Is it possible to disable highlight file type recognition?
3. Kate's "skins" (color themes) in Linux are inherited from the selected Linux desktop theme? This being different from Windows 10?
4. Are there any toolbar icons which are visible in a dark theme?
5. Is it possible to emphasize Hunspell spellcheck underline to be more noticeable in a dark background?

Well, since I probably do not use Kate the same way you do, I also had to look up the answers (something you would have been able to do yourself by looking at the settings):
1. Not AFAICS, but maybe by editing the configuration file. FWIW: who needs more than 16 characters? Use case? Maybe this is the wrong app for it, it is NOT a word processor but a text editor
2. By disabling file associations (MIME types) most likely, but that is a tad over the top, don't you think? This might hold more information about another option of configuration: viewtopic.php?f=225&t=164361

You entertain me by writing, "by looking at the settings". What do you think I did for weeks prior to posting? It's the lack of documentation that leads me here and ask questions.

I must clear up your misconceptions. Word processors are not text editors and Kate is a code editor and an incomplete text editor at this point. It already includes some features I need, and the others will most likely be included in time.

Large tab spacing is used to separate OCR text output which was originally in two columns but resulted in single column of unevenly ordered text rows. Preceding an originally right column text with a tab, then the text can be restored in proper column and row order with block copy and paste.

My question about disabling the highlight by MIME type was wrong. I discovered that the user's basic settings remain the same color regardless of the MIME type, and that is what I really needed.

There is no way to configure the skin color from within Kate, only the color of the objects in the text area. My question is about icons not being visible when one uses a dark theme in Linux. Also, none of the text related settings mention spell check underline color. This was asked because of the dark text area background used.
