hello to all !
i use a fresh install of kubuntu 20.04. Installed on a dell G5 laptop. (with nvidia optimus tech) it took me some time to finalize the install. Not always straightforward, but mostly things ended fine. I am using this laptop as the main computer of my professional activity (electrician). It is a middle range laptop, with an i58300H, 8 G ram, 256 G ssd, 1 T hdd, a nice 15" 1920x1080 px screen here is a sumary of inxi -F to give you more infos about the machine : [code]System: Host: xxxxx-G5-5590 Kernel: 5.4.0-65-generic x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: KDE Plasma 5.18.5 Distro: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (Focal Fossa) Machine: Type: Laptop System: Dell product: G5 5590 v: N/A serial: <superuser/root required> Mobo: Dell model: 0T5XC1 v: A00 serial: <superuser/root required> UEFI: Dell v: 1.12.0 date: 02/07/2020 Battery: ID-1: BAT0 charge: 43.5 Wh condition: 50.8/60.0 Wh (85%) CPU: Topology: Quad Core model: Intel Core i5-8300H bits: 64 type: MT MCP L2 cache: 8192 KiB Speed: 800 MHz min/max: 800/4000 MHz Core speeds (MHz): 1: 800 2: 800 3: 799 4: 800 5: 801 6: 801 7: 800 8: 800 Graphics: Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 driver: i915 v: kernel Device-2: NVIDIA GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile] driver: N/A Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev, vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 630 (CFL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.2.6 Audio: Device-1: Intel Cannon Lake PCH cAVS driver: snd_hda_intel Device-2: NVIDIA GP107GL High Definition Audio driver: snd_hda_intel Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.4.0-65-generic Network: Device-1: Intel Wireless-AC 9560 [Jefferson Peak] driver: iwlwifi IF: wlo1 state: up mac: 18:56:80:ff:a1:81 Device-2: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet driver: r8169 IF: enp3s0 state: down mac: e4:b9:7a:e6:d5:9d Drives: Local Storage: total: 1.26 TiB used: 89.30 GiB (6.9%) ID-1: /dev/nvme0n1 vendor: Toshiba model: KBG30ZMS256G NVMe 256GB size: 238.47 GiB ID-2: /dev/sda vendor: Toshiba model: MQ04ABF100 size: 931.51 GiB Partition: ID-1: / size: 49.73 GiB used: 18.95 GiB (38.1%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/nvme0n1p4 ID-2: /home size: 175.67 GiB used: 70.35 GiB (40.0%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/nvme0n1p3 ID-3: swap-1 size: 8.01 GiB used: 0 KiB (0.0%) fs: swap dev: /dev/nvme0n1p2 Sensors: System Temperatures: cpu: 39.0 C mobo: N/A Fan Speeds (RPM): N/A Info: Processes: 266 Uptime: 48m Memory: 7.60 GiB used: 2.13 GiB (28.1%) Shell: bash inxi: 3.0.38 [/code] i have some issues with kde : *when using the proprietary driver (nvidia) and the graphics card (gtx1050ti) , some strange artifacts are showing around the desktop icons *when using the free driver and the intel chip, display is ok : [img] http://i.goopics.net/800/ROWWO.jpg [/img] (img tag is not working... *Discover shows its large screen at start-up whether updates are or not available. Couldn't find a way to change that. I will probably end by desinstalling it but as it is supposed to be working... Discover has not enough configurations available (on how its interaction w/system /user is controlled) I am quite used to apt, so this isn't a gig deal, but i wanted to let you know. *i was unable to find how to adjust the sound of notifications, it says "0" all the time but notifications are very loud... about the sounds : sound configuration is somehow not very easy and/or effective. Needs some amelioration about what it says, and how to get things done... (many users ignore terms like "analogic stereo duplex", would be nicer to say it in a more explicit way...) *the shutdown process takes ages, sometimes hangs... *I also think the power management isn't good, neither with i915 driver nor nvidia driver... i am still trying to find infos, but not with good succès. So i shut down quite often to keep my battery charged when travelling... if this sounds interesting to anyone feel free to ask and propose whatever seems relevant. thanks |
