Every now and then one of my SD cards loses write functionality and becomes read-only. I have no idea what prompts this and the only way to get write functionality back is to format the disk.

I have tried

- rebooting

- fiddling with the lock/ unlock tab on the SD card.

Surely there's a quicker way to fix this? I feel that the system falsely flags the card as read-only and if I could change that flag then all would be good.

Did you test the integrity of the disk?

It is useful to look at the dmesg output immediately after connecting the SD card and after trying to read or write. There may be lines like this:

How do I do that?

If I can format the card, then wouldn't that mean there are no integrity issues? It's not just one card that gets affected.

I'll try that next time. What would be the solution here? To format? And why is it happening in the first place...?

Yet to 100% confirm, but I think it has something to do with deleting files from the SD card, whether that's a permanent delete or to .Trash-1000. If I cut and paste the files from the SD card to Desktop (for example), then delete from my hard drive it seems to be OK. It's a finnicky workaround, however. I'm always hesitant to delete from external media now...

I installed a fresh version of KDE on a fresh SSD and the system is nice and fresh! I haven't had the same SD card problems since.
