Still running Kubuntu 18.04. Undecided on where to go from there, and I'm one of those "if it aint broke, don't fix it" kind of people. I used Ubuntu 10.04 until I couldn't update FF or Chrome anymore and things were causing me trouble. lol

Anyway, I'm trying to find out how to get Kate to update beyond the damn LTS repository version, and Google isn't being very helpful. I can't seem to find a DEB or PPA for the current version (21.12.2).

You won't get anything newer from the PPAs as Kubuntu 18.04 is EOL, LTS releases don't get new major version of KDE things by design, and because later Plasma things require a newer Qt that you can't get in 18.04.

However.....there are both Snaps and appimages one can use for Kate:

Kate looks to be available via flatpak as well

I don't know what to do with any of that. Why the hell isn't there a DEB? Are we not doing those anymore? ugh.

Sure, there are going to be debs, but due to the age of your OS and its outdated Qt, Plasma and Frameworks libraries it has, no one is going to make all of those for 18.04.

appimages are universal self-contained executables that have all their dependencies baked in - just click and run (after setting the files as executable)

Snaps and Flatpaks are containerized and mostly self-contained 'universal' packaging systrems that include the needed dependencies as well, so something new can be run on something old, or on a distro that doesn't package something at all. .
18.04 supports snaps natively via Discover, for sure . Adding flatpak support is not hard to do , either.

Unfortunately, other than upgrading to the current Plasma via a more up to date distro release, those are going to be your options to get the latest Kate.
Nothing new here, considering the distro version you are running. Kubuntu 18.04 has been End of Life for almost a year now, and hasn't seen any Plasma related updates in about two and a half.
