How do I kill Kate?

Thu Jun 09, 2022 2:54 pm
I actually Googled "How do I Kill Kate?" yesterday and the results were ... disturbing. :-\

I am running Ubuntu 21.10 with KDE Plasma 5.22.5

Image

I launched Kate the other day to see if I liked it. When I did, this little window came up. I clicked "New Kate Session" and then poked around in the resulting Kate instance for a bit. Then when I closed Kate, the little window never went away and is still there. In fact I have two of them now.

Image

- They are not movable or resizable.
- They seem to be randomly placed.
- They have no context menu and do not show up on the task panel.
- They survive rebooting and do not show up in "top" or in the "System Activity" app, at least not under a recognizable name, so I cannot kill them.

How do I make them to die?

As nearly every application Kate creates user configuration files in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME and $XDG_DATA_HOME which should be ~/.config and ~/.local/share on Ubuntu.
Thats why settings survive a reboot.

That is not a process you can kill, as Kate is not running to show these session details, sowhat you are looking for is the "Kate session search plugin" which shows available sessions on searching for Kate in KRunner or other application menus. This can be disabled in Systemsettings → Workspace → Search → Plasma Search unchecking "Kate Sessions".

This looks like the system tray menu. On mine there is a button on the top right (above the search field on the screenshot you posted) which has a button to keep it permanently open. Maybe this is on.
