Switch from kickoff-menu to popup S&L menu.
KDE is a modern Desktop but Kickoff is still stop to the old KDE 3 idea. "Search and Launch" is rock, modern, nice and more consistent with the new KDE 4 idea. A great step for KDE can be making S&L in popup way and switch from Kickoff to S&L popup. Click on K button and open S&L. Extra idea: a good idea to emprove the experience is to show in the first S&L view (when you click in K button) both bookmarks applications and the most (or recent) used applications. I hope you will appreciate. Regards, Giuseppe. |

have you checked takeoff widget? is that what you mean?

Yes, I know Takeoff but is not the same of S&L (via popup). Also takeoff is not an official KDE project and the last update is 2011/08/30. I think S&L is most coherency with KDE4 philosophy, kde unfortunately seems to have forgotten the user desktop experience in favour to UI mobile. |

awesome idea
but we have to keep in mind that Search & Launch is little inconvenient if open so many dialogs. so, it should appear when you click Kickoff button and return back to [desktop activity] when you choose an application. I really encourage kde developers to take this idea seriously. you know in the meanwhile all Operating Systems & DEs no longer view the applications in menu , they view them in Full Screen mode. Windows 8 Mac OS X Gnome Shell Unity KDE we don't want to be old fashion and leak behind industrial, we want to keep up industrial motivation and have modern way to view applications and Search & launch is one of the best choices we have. but application launcher & basic menu shouldn't be delete, we should keep them as alternative menus. and the user has the option to choose which menu to be the default one .

Exactly, you have explained better my idea. |

Am I the only one that do not really support this idea ?
Because I think that for a desktop, Kickoff is better suited to all these full screen launchers. Desktops are controlled with mouse, and if you have a big screen, in order to click on those big icons, you have to move your mouse a lot. On kickoff, on the contrary, the mouse do not move much. But this idea fits well for a tablet for example, or a hybrid touch / laptop (like Lenovo Xxxxt series) |

Nah.. there are more sane people. Seriously, it does not make much sense to make that default.. use search and launch if you have to. And after using excellent launchers like Lancelot (any idea why it is not default?), which, btw, does everything in the OP, I seriously can't contemplate using anything else in a desktop.

I prefer Kickoff. Then, I think that KDE should give choice. Choice to have Kickoff, Lancelot or S&L. Maybe Kickoff will stay the default launcher, since it is basic. For me, lancelot is a bit too powerful, and might be aimed at powerusers. |

@ Sfiet_Konstantin
@ manasij7479 please understand that in this topic we aren't discussing which menu to be the default. it is about a new idea that could improve KDE workspace and as I siad a earlier to keep up with instruial motivation. and for sure the choice is up to the user which one to be the defualt. |

This is a great idea. I'm already using S&L on my desktop with a panel at the bottom of the screen with icon-tasks, digital clock, pagers, and system trays on it and it works fantastic with me.

it seems that Peter Penz was right ! KDE is loosing competitiveness & Not a modern UIs anymore.
I don't konw how KDE developers prefer to have Old fashion Menu & never keep up with industrial motivation and have modern UIs. Even this section of the forum: seems like just Dreaming of better future or talking in the desert (where no one to hear you ! ) |

Exactly!!! I agree with you and Peter Penz. I think that they lack true purpose and true guidelines. The development follows much the mood of the developers. At this time they're really down with UI Mobile and have dropped UI Desktop.

Desktop is being worked on, but not in the sense it was around 4.0. Most of the time it fits its purpose, so there's no point in reinventing the wheel again. There *are* some things that need improvement though, but I digress.
The idea of popup SAL was something I've thought of as soon as Marco implemented it, and it would (IMO) be a quite good replacement for Kickoff. But, and I can not stress it enough, *not* fullscreen. The fact that osx did it, and later others as well doesn't mean it is a good choice. It is ok for smaller screens, not for big ones. The thing that has always terrified me is the desktop of an ordinary windows user. The whole screen covered in icons, where you can not find anything. And that was in the era of 14" screens. See: http://www.enterprise-dashboard.com/img/ad-agency-ceo-desktop.jpg for an example. Now imagine a 23" screen filled with icons. See http://linuxnow.ru/files/81/unity3.png and imagine how much you need to move your mouse in order to run FTP program. As soon as you have the need to keep your favourite applications in the panel (like all the mentioned systems do), it means that the application launcher has failed to provide a quick way of launching apps. |
