This post is part of a global idea that aims to integrate Internet into KDE workspace (See here)

Sharing data on the Internet with KDE SW is already quite easy. I often use the ability to send a file by mail by right click in dolphin > action > send via mail. I know that it is pretty basic, and that gnome or windows might do it, but I know that in KDE it is easy to extend, and that other sharing features might also be added quite easily. I also really appreciate KIPI plugins, with all the sharing abilities that it brings. All my imaging applications can now send my pictures / screenshots to a lot of online services, and it is really easy to use (once again).

The only drawbacks in KDE workspace is that sharing abilities is not a central feature. Actually, we can see that there are some apps that implement sharing abilities a lot (graphics apps), some others a little (dolphin), and some apps don't implement sharing at all whereas they could be able to do it. (Kdenlive but I'm not sure).

What I want is a central sharing ability. Once again, I will bring the example of Nokia N9, since I found that even if the implementation in it is quite bad, the idea is good. The N9 provides a "share UI" that aggregates all the online accounts that have sharing abilities and display them while the "share" button is clicked.

In KDE, we have the same kind of behaviour, but only with graphics apps (and KIPI), but I think it should be extended to all applications. Graphics applications can share photos to flickr or picasa, but video editing software or viewer can share them to youtube or dailymotion. And of cause, all kind of files should be sharable via mail, or IM.

Here is a small mockup

This menu might also appear in Dolphin's context menu, as well as in rekonq / konqueror when left click on a link, or as a toolbar button.
Of cause, depending to the type of data to share (picture / text / video / music / link ...) different options might not be available.

This most likely will not be a button in every application - but a global in-plasma one like Plasma Active has - share-like-connect applet.

I don't know if it is the best idea (even if it is not really bad) for desktops. Because, I still consider KDE as a desktop environnement, even if Apple / Microsoft / Gnome are moving to a hybrid desktop-tablet DE. In all DE, we might have many windows opened. If we want to share the content of a window that is not in focus by clicking on the plasma button, the result might not be the wanted one.

But since I don't know how this button will be, I'm waiting for mockups and implementations 8)

As I said, works for plasma active quite nicely.

I definitely don't think that the fact that you need to switch to a specific window in order to share or bookmark something is a viable issue to have the applications implement these features in all the different places that the app authors want to place them.

This is what it looks like on the desktop: (needs to be better looking, and to have more plugins)

I believe too that the share capability of kde workspace has to be improved
example:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=281269

and another thing that i believe that improves KDE workspace is to have a "create to-do/event" action for everything , a file, a website/url, an email(currently supported), ...etc
