panel config usability

Fri Feb 21, 2014 5:34 pm
Hi KDE devs!

I don't post much on these forums nor frequent the IRC but I've been a KDE user since the beginning, on and off. I'm quite excited about v5 and Wayland support so I wanted to give my 2p on what I believe is in dire need of some dev attention.

I've just tried a pretty current v5 build via the project neon distro and I was disappointed to see that the same, confusing and not really usable panel config widget/menu remains. Oh dear! The single biggest, or at least the most notable, failing of KDE 4.x IMO is the difficulty I still have in trying to configure the panel, most specifically when it comes to moving and positioning widgets or app shortcuts.

It was difficult under KDE 4 to move and position a widget or app launcher within the panel and that was when you knew how to do it. I remember I had to search to find a guide on how it was supposed to work in the early days of 4.x and thats someone who had used every previous KDE release and most other OSs/desktops too. Now under KDE 5, it seems moving panel items doesn't work at all. That may only be expected in its alpha state but sadly it looks like no work has been done yet to make panel config more intuitive and user friendly.

To move a widget or app launcher within the KDE panel should be as straightforward as being able to right-click on it and then choose 'Move'. You'd then be able to move the item and position it with a left click. It would be nice to have an alternate method to move items too such as MMB-drag or CTRL+LMB-drag and release to position. Neither method would require that even experienced computer users go digging out the docs or a online guide for such a basic task. I'm sorry if this seems blindingly obvious stuff - I think it is!

On a related note, is there really any need for the 'Panel Toolbox widget' when we can access that via the 'Panel options' context menu? Once we can move panel items without using the panel settings popup, I don't think people will really need to use it that much to justify its own widget.

The other KDE feature I hope to see improved for v5 is a much improved Find tool in Dolphin. The current Find implemetation is very basic as it lacks the ability to search for files by size or within a specific time frame.

Apart from that - great work guys! KDE is the most fully featured desktop bar none!

Thanks!
