I am trying to use Konsole to login to another Unix server with telnet. I am trying to use the Linux computer as a Unix workstation.
I can telnet into the Unix server and login. The Unix server is running BBx Pro/5 compiler. The control keys and graphics don't work. To fix the control keys I went into settings > config profile > Input . Then created a new profile and entered the correct termcap entries into the profile. This fixed the control keys. But, I have no way to fix the graphics. It seems that Konsole Profile can only handle the pre-established entries. So, I tried to go to the Environment and changed it to a different /etc/termcap entry. But, Konsole completely ignores the termcap. So, I then created a new profile and ripped out all the entries to force it to find the /etc/termcap I set in the Enviroment window. No luck there either. I tried to set the $TERM env variable before telnet into the Unix server, but Konsole overrode this too. I then went into /etc/ttytype and tried to force the termcap there too. But, Konsole overrode that too. Do I need to buy a real terminal emulator to access other Unix servers? Is there a way to put in graphic termcap entries into the Konsole Profile entries? Is there a way to force the /etc/termcap entry to override Konsole? I'm almost there, but can't find a way to get the graphics to work. I have worked with Unix since the 1980's. But am new to Linux and KDE. |

The line graphics come out as question marks in reverse. It also dumps other characters onto the screen. By line graphics, I mean vertical lines, horizontal lines, corner lines, and intersections line characters. These characters are usually in the upper part of the ascii charts. Anything to make lines or boxes comes out in question marks in reverse. You can also look at the PC-8 Symbol Set (HP) at hex B3 and this will produce a vertical line as a character. Hex C4 will produce a horizontal line. Corners would be hex BF, C0, D9, and DA. If you still don't understand I can post some pictures.
The servers we are attaching to are older SCO Unix 5.0.7. On the server side we use special termcaps written by the compiler company. They work perfect. If we use a terminal emulator (such as TinyTerm, Hyperterminal, ICE, etc) on a Windows PC it works perfect. On the Windows PC, we set the Emulation to ansi. But, for some reason Konsole keeps reverting back to the more modern Linux termcap. The Konsole editable profile only handles the control keys. You cannot enter special characters. I suggest filing a bug against Konsole in this case, as it should be able to at least load another type of termcap to make this scenario workable.
