Starting Konsole, brings up the Konsole-screen, but it brings a warning just after opening.
Warning: Could not start program '/bin/bash' with arguments '/bin/bash'.

Using Mandriva 2009.0 with KDE 4.2.2.

You mean "initial directory"? That one is empty
Command is: /bin/bash

If you create a new profile ( Konsole > Settings > Manage profiles > New profile ) does that make any difference?
Also, try changing the command to '/bin/sh'

Creating a new profile doesn't make any difference.
Will try your second suggestion later on, for i am not right now using the laptop on which this occured.
Thanks for your advise, will let you know.

Still no solution for this issue.

Can use Konsole by killing one Konsole-session in "System Activity" in Mandrvia 2009.1.
This problem does not occur on my desktop, which also has the same configuration, Mandriva 2009.1-64bits and KDE 4.2.2.
Did some fiddling around with session-profiles, but never howsoever came to a better result.
Since installing eTerm i had another way using a terminal, but after upgrading to Mandriva 2009.1, also eTerm doesn't work anymore. It starts, shows it's window/screen and then dies.

When i issue the konsole-command in Konsole, i get the following output:

konsole(20402): Attempt to use QAction "change-profile" with KXMLGUIFactory!
kDebugStream called after destruction (from virtual Konsole::SessionManager::~SessionManager() file /home/mandrake/rpm/BUILD/kdebase-4.2.2/apps/konsole/src/SessionManager.cpp line 234)

Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive areply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "

Konsole SessionManager destroyed with sessions still alive
bash: Konsole: command not found

(20400)/: Communication problem with "konsole" , it probably crashed.
bash: 20400: command not found

Konsole-screen opens with:

Warning: Could not start program '/bin/bash' with arguments '/bin/bash'.

Have set up a new user, and logged in into KDE.
Starting Konsole brings up de Konosle-screen after some 25 seconds.
And the same error here.

Nothing would cause Konsole to behave like this normally. Please contact your distribution, since it appears they have a bug in their packages.

Got same problem after some updates in Kubuntu Karmic.
First try of start 'konsole' after reboot shows red text in konsole window "Warning: Could not start program '/bin/bash' with arguments '/bin/bash'.' without bash command prompt. Second tries starts console normally or with bug randomly.

isadora, does you solve your bug? If yes, please tell me how.

@Murz: you may wish to try the following commands:

Code: Select all
rm $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/konsolerc
rm -rf $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/apps/konsole

I have this problem in Ubuntu Lucid. The distribution is originally Ubuntu, with KDE installed on top of it (not kubuntu), but I let the KDE update tool carry out the distribution upgrade from Karmic to Lucid. Since then konsole will not start properly from icon clicks and will not open up under the Dolphin window. It will start properly if invoked from xterm, and it will enter the bash shell if, after opening with the red print error message, I choose File -> Shell.

Konsole also seems to start without problems from an icon click once or twice after kde initially comes up, but then it reverts to this behavior.

The fix proposed by bcooksley does not work for me. Konsole can be started over and over, properly, after a fresh start of a kde session. After invocation of a few other kde programs, the bad behavior begins and persists. I haven't yet found any sequence of actions that reliably triggers the bad behavior, but it always eventually takes over. If the window with Konsole displaying the red error message is left open, clicks on icons to open konsole or opening the terminal from within Dolphin work properly. But if the window with the error message is closed, konsole starts timing out without displaying any window if invoked from an icon or from within Dolphin. It can still be invoked properly from xterm or xfce-terminal.

@chris41: Have you checked that all packages were successfully upgraded?

Octave 3.2 and ess 5.8 were not successfully updated, but those do not seem relevant to this problem, and those were the only error messages. The upgrade did end abnormally, and I had to reload the nvidia driver manually, but now everything else seems to work and no packages are shown in synaptic as having any problems. I have reinstalled konsole a couple of times. It may be that I should purge kde and reinstall it?
