How does one enable video and audio chat in telepathy? The feature is widely advertised but they are currently grayed out for me. I am using KDE 4.12.2 and have added google and skype accounts. After quite a bit of searching I came across a package called
Code: Select all
kde-telepathy-call-ui
that was not installed. I thought that might do the trick but after install and reboot I still can't click on video / audio calls.

Many thanks!

Having the same problem on Kubuntu 14.04. I simply cannot get it to work.
Could someone help, who has it up and running?

It seems this is only possible when the other end also has KDE telepathy installed, which makes the whole thing quite useless to me. Various developers have stated differently though ... How to proceed?

We can't video call to Hangouts or Skype contacts; not only are there technical limitations we simply aren't allowed.

We do support video calls to other clients; providing they use the same Jabber specs, so primarily Empathy or Muji and maybe some others.

We are in the middle of a porting operation for the call UI, which makes some things difficult. See here for details: http://community.kde.org/KTp/Tasks/NewCallUI

But not out-of-the-box yet (4.13). One has to recompile KTp manually - even with Arch Linux since the AUR package is orphaned (I switched to Hangout once again).

Thanks for your reply David!
Would calls to pidgin clients work? I guess not :-(
As I understand this does not work with hangouts on the other end. (Skype is not option for me anyway as it requires a binary blob).
What about other account types like Facebook messenger? Does this work to other people not having a client?
It would be cool if you could summarize what is possible and what is not possible, I would be willing to write a summary for the wiki, this would save a lot trouble with users questions.
This is especially interesting if you have friends that are on windows and do not know how to compile stuff, so that we know what precompiled clients available for Windows allow video conversations with telepathy.
One thing I am really looking forward too is when upstream implements OTR, this would be really cool.

It's a shame Hangouts and Skype cannot be supported. They are the two chat services I use. But I guess it's not really on KDE.

Thanks for the info.
