CPU usage

Tue Nov 01, 2005 6:31 am
hey guys, great thing this ktorrent :)

I noticed that my ktorrent always uses up around 28% of my CPU (1 GHz coppermine), no matter if the full GUI is visible or it is only running as system tray icon. I wonder wether that could be optimized? I would assume that a large chunk of the CPU usage is for GUI updates?
Also I notice quite a bit of flickering when viewing the GUI.

Are you working on optimizing resource usage and GUI speed, or planning to do so?

I noticed the same , when updating to SVN revision 476211 the CPU usage was sudenly something like 25-30% for KTorrent.

But updating today to revision 476485 it fell to 2.5-3% with the same load, so everthing is good again:-)

Great work as usuall.

Bummer, forget the previous post. Sorry.

More or less at the time I pressed post, the CPU usage increased to 33-35%. The torrent was fully downloading, but after some time(5-10min or so) the CPU usage increased.

I tried putting a cap on download speed, but that did not change the CPU usage. So I set it back. Shortly after the usage increased again to 45-47%. Looks like it stabilized somewhat on that level for a while, then increased little again to 48-52%.

Stopping the torrent made the CPU usage drop below 3%, starting it again results in the usage increasing. It climbed to over 40% in apr. 5min.

The tracker reports as unreachable, but I don't know if it's related or not.

I am currently running a Kubuntu torrent on my 1 Ghz Pentium 3 :

CPU usage the highest peek was around 15 % , but it mostly remains below 5 %, download speeds are around 100 KB/s (The peek CPU usage happened after a short dowload speed burst of 400 KB/s)

We have had performance issues in the passed, I had a torrent who was using up to 80-90%, after some optimizations, that number dropped to less then 5 %, on my rather measly 1 Ghz P3

How many peers are you connected to and how many chunks are there in the torrent ?

I am using version 1.1.rc1 atm.
Will an update to 1.1 fix the problem?

Hi, the anonymous ones was mine, forgot to login:-(

Anyway, I use Athlon XP 2400+(2Ghz). The download speed vary from nearly nothing up to max of 124KB/s(average 40-60) and download about 20KB/s, CPU usage don't seem to dependent on this tho.

As of right now i have: CPU 25%, 40KB/s Down, 20KB/s up and 96 peers.
Chunks: 19561total, current 12,(have excluded ~ 15000)

CPU usage seems to increase along with the downspeed.

When I start the download, it goes around 300KB/s (and KTorrent uses ~10% of the CPU).

When it increase, so does the CPU usage. Currently I'm at 1,6MB/s and KTorrent uses ~20% of the CPU. I'm connected to 77 peers (11 leechers, 66 seeders).

When I'm done downloading and seeding only (at about 30KB/s right now), it uses ~2% of the CPU.

My computer is a 1,6GHz Centrino (Pentium-M).

Our past performance problems were mostly with torrents who had lots of chunks. We could probably optimize the situation with lots of excluded chunks some more.
