DHT request

Fri Dec 16, 2005 6:36 am
First of all I would like to thank you for this great piece of software... A couple of weeks ago I used Ubuntu and Azureus... Until I've downloaded the OpenSuse and as you may know OpenSuse comes with KTorrent... Just love your bittorrent-client... Thanks...

But there's one thing I am really missing... DHT... Azureus and Mainline normally get much more Seeders and Leechers through DHT... Plus some files are not on a listed public tracker... Or not anymore... Hence, please, please add DHT support...

I was planning to start working on it, between Christmas and new year, I hope to get it in the 1.2 release (end january 06). but only if it's stable.

Plus some files are not on a listed public tracker.
And that is the reason some clients are banning from AL-Trackern (e.g. Azureus + BitComet 0.6 are baned from TS-Tracker (tstracker.dyn.pl)). If DHT in ktorrent1.2 like the DHT-handling from µtorrent...in this case DHT are fine, otherwise ist bad like my english :D

I don't think so, there is no way that a tracker can now, if a client supports DHT or not, It can only know what client you are running by 2 things :
- The useragent string in the HTTP request
- The PeerID (for ktorrent 1.1 this would be -KT1100-<random string of 12 digits>)

Any news on the DHT thing? Here is why i ask: all my stargate torrents just died  as they all used the same tracker.
Question: can a torrent use more than one tracker?

Because of the upcoming 1.2 release all I have been doing is fixing bugs, DHT is on hold for the moment, but it will be the number 1 thing on my TODO list after the 1.2 release at the end of the month.

Torrents can contain backup trackers, and KT will try those if it can't reach the first tracker, but not all torrents come with backup trackers.

Cool :)
But that only happens if the torrent itself provides these backup trackers, yes? It would be usefull to be able to manualy add another tracker you know exists :D

Lets imagine i make myself a tracker, and have my fav tv show torrents in it and add myself as a seed to them. Then, ppl could have a "backup tracker" for those torrents. Only they would have to be able to manualy add my tracker to their already downloading torrents.
This is just an idea for the use of multiple trackers per torrent.

I really hope that DHT will be done SOON, since it is the one thing torrent clients on Linux misses.

But else I think that Ktorrent is a nice client, a little like µtorrent on windows

I'm working on it, I should have working code within a month.

Once this is finished and protocoll encryption is also done, we will release a beta release, so that these two features can be tested properly.

@ddv
Please don't stress George, it's not necessary.
George has to do this DHT mostly reverse engineering and that's NOT done in a week or so. So please sit back and wait until it's delivered.

This was not meant to stress George, I just wanted to point out that I really think that DHT is an important feature, and it should be the feature which has highest priority

I know that the developers are doing a hell of a job to give us a even better client :)
