Timed/Scheduled downloads

Sun Jan 01, 2006 9:43 am
Is it possible to set up some kind of a timer/scheduler to start downloading the torrents ?

The problem is that my ISP has severely curtailed the download /upload limits. Further, the network is severely congested. However, it's only by early morning in 2 that things clear up a bit.

I was wondering whether it might be possible to have a timer, to keep my computer on for the night and schedule the downloads after the said time.

Ktorrent is simplistic, easy to set up and use. I must admit I am a newbie to Linux and torrents.

Sounds like a nice simple feature, we will do it.

In the meantime, you will have to use your alarm clock or stay up really late. Or you could setup a cron job.

Great George! I am sure there are enough people out there to appreciate this little nifty feature. When would this be implemented?

What is a cron job? Could you elaborate? I couldn't find any references in the KDE help files. Thanks in advance.

Cron is for Linux what the Scheduler (I think that is the name) is for Windows.
The difference is that cron is more powerful, harder to understand and has (of course) no gui. Yet there is one for kde called kcron.
Cron is no part of kde it's part of the base system of every linux, for further information you could enter
man cron
or
man crontab
in the console in order to see the man page of this programme.
What it lets you do is basically invoke a command at any given time. This way you could end/start ktorrent by simply adding a command.

Depends on how much time I got and how much bugs we encounter. I don't know if it is going to make 1.2 (at the end of the month).

If you were to use ktorrent in a cron job what command line options are there under ktorrent to stop all and start all jobs? Or would you have to 'killall ktorrent' and then start it again at the time you want?

You can use dcop to control a running instance of KT.

Just type dcop ktorrent for a list of interfaces you can call, then do dcop ktorrent <interface> to see which methods each interface supports.

One interface supports startAll and stopAll

Not KDE, *nix. Try 'man cron', and perhaps 'man at' too.

cron - daemon to execute scheduled commands
at - executes commands at a specified time.

Horray!

The scheduler works great now. I was severely handicapped by the limits and the alarm clock didnt really work out.

I reloaded Ubuntu and installed Dapper. The 2 beta is much much better than the previous versions. Specially the scheduler part. :) Keep up the good job and a BIG thanks.
