Rants, Raves and requests

Fri Jan 06, 2006 12:34 am
Instead of wasting space on a new thread I want to go along with this idea.

I just installed 1.2rc1 from a slackware package. I think this is the only bittorrent package available on linuxpackages.net other than bittorent itself. I am coming from using Azureus. God was that a memory hog. And it used up a lot of resources. Mainly having to run ontop of a java thread was harsh.

But I like the tightness of this program. If you close to the menu icon it runs with very little proccess load. Which for me is good since I have to run twonkyvision media server at the same time.

One of the great things is a modulized system. I closed down all modules since I don't care what peers are connected and downloading what. But I guess its good to have, just to make sure things are running right.

So here is my feature request that I did not post otherwise:
1 Since there is a upnp server in KTorrent... maybe we could tweak it to impliment a media server? This way I can watch shows I have dled on my laptop with WinAmp? or on my Media lounge? Of course I maight be comparing apples and oranges.

2: When posting a new torrent a quick check to make sure this file is not already downloaded. If so just make it a seed. This way I can put my seeding files from azureus into KTorrents done directory and reseed them.

3: an option to occasionally check a directory for new torrent files. That way any new files in a specified directory will automatically start. This way all I would have to do is add new files to a directory and not actually manually add them to KTorrent.

Thanks a million for a good program and trying to make it great. I used to try to help with ABC but when I switched to Linux they never bother to fix their linux version.

There's an 'Import existing download' option in the 'File' menu in KTorrent. It's a lil work selecting the files, but I personally wouldn't want a scan of my computer every time I start a new download simply because that would go against why I'm using KT - it's light on system resources. I, too, abandoned Azureus because it used up pretty much all my system and I don't want KT to go the same way.

Again, is it really necessary? Whenever I download torrents, I use KT's search plugin, which immediately begins downloading the torrent, and haven't manually saved a torrent file since... well... since I started using KT. If it is implemented, please make it a plugin I can unload :) I like to keep things light.

KT is a bittorrent client, not a streaming media server. And the UPnP stuff is really only to forward some ports, it doesn't do much more.

Like dpearman said existing downloads can be imported.

You can easily write a plugin to do that, but at the moment I do not have much time. (and new features are not going into 1.2 anyway, except for the QueueManager)

Well yes there is a plugin... but its something that could easily be done automatically without having to run a plugin. I guess its easier for you to make it harder on the end user since you have a sub-standard way of doing it already in place.

Its your program. In truth since its free there is no real reason to try to make it better, since its you guys doing the work and your not getting paid. But I like the way it uses my systems rescources. I do like the modular design. But I am no programer. I am an end user. So the only way I can make it better is to make suggestions that I would believe would make it more popular.

If your not getting paid you might as well work for popularity. Popularity is cheap form of recognition. Its the ability to say hey I did this and people liked it. Its self worth in the end. I recently put on a festival and lost money. 600 people showed up and had a good time. They may not know my name but they know what I did and it makes me happy. I believe that freeware, gpl and that sort of programer works on the same idea.

I am not trying to criticize. Its my way of helping. My way of saying hey thats a popular program and I contributed.

Actually import existing is a major pain if your like me and have 50 torrents that I keep up for reseed purposes. Of course in truth its only a pain once when moving to KTorrent for the first time. But occasionally if you get a re-seed request it can be helpful. But usually for a re-seed request you will only do it for one or two files. Though adjusting the import plugin to do all files in a directory would be fine.

The second bit was an idea for a plug-in. Its based on me using a program that takes torrents off an rss feed and places them into a directory. When I manually add files I just cut and paste the url.

Sometimes I am so adle brained. I forgot to mention a point George made. Really the UPNP request I mentioned because I was not sure what the UPNP did. I stupidly figured that since the standard for media servers was UPNP and since torrents were for dling files that they were inter related. No one has ever said what the UPNP option did.

Thanks for the info.

I disagree with your reply in more than several matters.

Well yes there is a plugin... but its something that could easily be done automatically without having to run a plugin. I guess its easier for you to make it harder on the end user since you have a sub-standard way of doing it already in place.

Why a plugin instead of merging the code directly in KT?
Well, many people don't need that feature and it's much easier for people who are not involved in KT development to write a plugin by just taking a look on needed interfaces... It's like writting a small and simple application.
Its your program. In truth since its free there is no real reason to try to make it better, since its you guys doing the work and your not getting paid.

I don't know where did you get this idea... So why are we doing this when we are not getting paid? Are we crazy? I'll skip myself, but I can tell you that since I joined this project there was not a single week that Joris didn't add something to the repository trying to make KT better. What's the purpose of making an application if it's a **** and you don't want to improve it...
But I like the way it uses my systems rescources. I do like the modular design. But I am no programer. I am an end user. So the only way I can make it better is to make suggestions that I would believe would make it more popular.

Yes, and we really appreciate your help. That's exactly this forums purpose - to see what KT users will say about it. What they like/dislike etc... But, you must know that not every request can be approved. It's really simple - it won't matter if KT is able to load all torrents from specified directory if it crashes on startup and we don't fix that, right?

If your not getting paid you might as well work for popularity. Popularity is cheap form of recognition. Its the ability to say hey I did this and people liked it. Its self worth in the end. You are right and for this I agree.

The second bit was an idea for a plug-in. Its based on me using a program that takes torrents off an rss feed and places them into a directory. When I manually add files I just cut and paste the url.

Someone else also requested this as an RSS plugin which will be able to download torrents automatically from RSS feeds based on regular expression. It's in TODO list but the work on this plugin hasn't started yet.

To make adding a whole directory of torrents to KTorrent easier.

Could you not just use a perl script and dcop?

Something along the lines of:
Code: Select all
#!/usr/bin/perl

# Loads all torrent files in a directory into KTorrent

my @torrents = glob "*.torrrent";

foreach $curfile (@torrents) {
   system "dcop ktorrent KTorrent openTorrent $curfile";
}

I haven't tested that, but it should work.
