Max download not being honoured?

Fri Jan 13, 2006 9:24 pm
I'm recompiling an svn extract still from an hour ago (yes, I eventually got svn installed - thanks for your patience, George!), so I'm currently using something a bit older.

The max download rate isn't being honoured. I've set mine to 80KB/s, but I've had one peer send to me in excess of 120KB/s. Not that I mind getting my torrent faster per se, but I put in the limit so I'd still have sufficient bandwidth for other activities, knowing that this could slow down my getting the torrents I've signed up for.

While it seems to me to be similar to the upload max not being honoured we had in 1.2rc1, I'm not going to say anything definitive about it.

Note that while I was watching in amazement, I noticed that I was also downloading from other peers, and not just in the single torrent - I was downloading via other peers as well.

I know, I still need to tweak that, but it's a tricky problem, there is no slowdown message in the protocol, so the only way I can do this is by altering the interval I send requests, but that does not stop the other side from sending individual pieces at higher then the limit speeds. t.

Isn't that the whole point of bittorrent ?

The point of the statement was that even though a single download from a single peer was going over my max download rate, that didn't prevent KT from also downloading from others. Which I thought that, while you couldn't control individual downloads from sending too fast, perhaps once you hit the maximum, you'd stop using other peers for a bit.

As you said, it needs some tweaking.
