(yes, I'm splitting hairs ) when the same client is feeding two chunks, the same d/l speed is displayed for both chunks, even if only one is showing progress, so I guess the speed displayed for a given chunk is in fact the total speed from the client...

You are correct, this is just easier to calculate, Otherwise we would have to examine the data as it comes in, which is not that difficult, but probably a hassle to do.
