building svn in kubuntu

Fri May 19, 2006 6:48 am
I was initially impressed with ktorrent, particularly for its efficient use of system resources. However, after a couple days of usage (1.2; using .deb on d/l page), I started to pay closer attention... I noticed unusually high share ratios, ignored upload rate limits, and highly erratic download rates and was quite disappointed. However, it seems like there has been some significant work done since 1.2.

So, I'm giving svn a shot. This post is mostly informational for anyone else who might try the same. I'll try and report my progress and my observations as well.

I'm building on Kubuntu Dapper (which I keep pretty current). Here are some additional packages that I had to install:

automake1.9
kde-devel
libgmp3-dev
libqt3-mt-dev

Now, I already had other development-related packages installed before trying my hand at building ktorrent, so this list is not a comprehensive list of dependencies. I want to point out automake1.9 since there are several versions available in the ubuntu repos.

After installing those packages, the build instructions listed here:

http://ktorrent.pwsp.net/index.php?page=faq#q3

should all execute successfully. Pay close attention to the output of the ./configure stage just in case there are other missing build dependencies.

So far, so good. ktorrent seems to be up and running and doing its thang. I'll post again to let everyone know how well it performs.

performance update

Well, my last build went well and it certainly made a positive difference in terms of more consistent, faster download speeds.

I just built today's svn (since I just saw the 2.0beta announcement) and have been testing it out.

I noticed a problem with DHT. It appears to be the same symptoms experienced by sasha in this post. Basically, downloads were consistent but pretty slow compared to what i was used to for my connection. To find out why, I enabled the log viewer plugin and noticed a flood of 'Queueing RPC call...' messages. sasha's post suggested to disable DHT. I did so and found that the CPU usage returned to normal and the download speeds increased.

That's all for now!
