did you read the bug report?
the leeching assistance is in the very fundament of ktorrent. it loves to delete partial files from HD when they are being unchecked in infowidget ("dont download"). instead it should keep them so it could upload chunks from them. if i have little space i can delete them by myself. but what if i have space, want to upload them, but dont want to complete their download? in my special case (when i wanna help seeder but dont have all the files from multitorrent) it downloads missing chunks while not uploading ones it has (there are only one peer and i know it doesnt have chunks i have) while, of course, i need quite the contrary |

Not really, i was in a hurry
I think your point is valid if you take into account that there are dirty leechers out there. And although it will still be possible from outside the client, we might do good not advertising it too much.
So you like to see, lets call it... a "pause mode" on files instead of delete so that files will stay available.
I can't place this "not uploading ones i have" at all, but this might be me... Could you try explaining the situation again please? |

I just decided to try using utorrent in wine to see if it'll download a particular torrent faster.. And it immediatly connects to all the available peers, and many of the torrents, and starts downloading at 10-40KB/s for this one single torrent. Where as ktorrent will barely get 1 seed, and thats after quite some time, and will only connect to a few of the known peers, and maybe download at 50KB/s for 10 torrents (usually more like 10-20KB/s, for all, not each). Whatever utorrent is doing, it seems to be quite a bit better than ktorrent.

My guess is µTorrent's peer exchange is probably the biggest reason why it connects to more peers quickly.
The problem with peer exchange is that there are several incompatible versions of that. Azureus, BitComet, µTorrent and BitTornado support this, but they are all incompatible with each other. |

If its possible to support more than one version at the same time, that would be excellent.
I have been taking a look at both utorrent and ktorrent. They seem to find "about" the same number of peers (for private trackers, with dht off, obviously), but utorrent does manage to download faster. |

Just moved another torrent over to uTorrent in wine, to see if it would go faster, and it immediately connected to 10x more peers. Both ktorrent and uTorrent saw about the same amount of peers.
heres the torrent if you're interested in trying it. You may notice that it has over 10,000 seeds and 20,000 peers. Though I doubt this is whats causing ktorrent to not connect to many peers, as the same thing happens with other torrents. ktorrent just doesn't want to connect to many peers ever. Right now, uTorrent is connected to over 200 peers for that one torrent, after only a few minutes, and ktorrent barely got over 20 after being on for quite a few hours. I think if ktorrent's behavioir here can be changed to be more like the rest of the torrent clients, I won't have any serious complaints (theres still a few little things that bug me, but not as much as having to run Azereus, or run uTorrent in wine). |
