Speedbar problems?

Sun Jan 14, 2007 2:15 pm
The speedbar introduced in 2.1 is very nice. Although I'm experiencing some problems. If I open Firefox, the bars disappears for a few seconds, happens with most other applications as well. Using kde 3.55 with Kubuntu Edgy...

And what about changing the display of them to be an one-minute average (or 15 seconds or ...)instead of seeing them jumping up and down? Maybe steal some design from Amaroks trayicon that shows song progress? A smooth coloring of the two arrows in ktorrents icon instead of the two bars?

Just got another idea, as of now - there is two options for the speed bars - max download/upload rate. Why not have an option for it to use the same values as the global maximum download/upload limit? So there is the choice of either setting it to a fixed value like 50 or have it be the same as the global limit.

Probably when FF or another pretty big app is starting, they consume a lot of CPU, so there is not much left to update the bars.

That last thing would be cool, don't know how we could achieve it, manually editing png's probably isn't the best option.

All you need to do is have three icons, one with filled arrows, and another with unfilled arrows, and the third would have only three colors: one color for the upload arrow, another color for the download arrow, and a third color for everything else. The third icon would serve as a mask that KTorrent would use to determine what parts of the icon need to be filled and unfilled. Then KTorrent just combines parts of the two icons using the third as the mask, using more or less of each arrow depending on speed. It should probably go top-to-bottom for the download arrow, and bottom-to-top for the upload arrow.

It's simple in theory. Maybe it could even be put in a library so other apps could do similar things.
