Maybe this is a stupid question, but how do I enable debugging symbols?

You have to recompile KTorrent with debugging symbols. Just do:

./configure --enable-debug=full

and compile the usual way

I did what you said but there's no chance to get any output. The freezing simply happens to fast. After running KTorrent for around 2 or 3 minutes I noticed that something was written to the harddrive. This always indicated me, that ktorrent crashes. So I pressed ctrl+c the moment I heard the writing but it's always not fast enough. Also since after pressing ctrl+c won't shutdown ktorrent is a problem. Even if I would be lucky enough to get the right moment to press ctrl+c ktorrent will still continue to freeze my system since it won't be shut down. At least not over here after pressing ctrl+c.
But one thing always happens: As soon as this writing to the harddisk, which takes around one second, nothing more, starts ktorrent freezes in exactly the same moment. Maybe this helps....

Can't say I know what's happening... :(

Say, when you remove all your torrents does this still happen?
It's a boring job, but you can remove(backup) all your torrents from ~/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent/torX and then start adding one by one and restart KTorrent. When you get KT freeze again, the last torrent you've added is causing the problem. We'll see what next after you find this torrent....

Only when having no torrent in ktorrent it doesn't freeze. As soon as I put a torrent into the list it'll freeze sooner or later. It doesn't depend on the torrent. It happens with every torrent file no matter what it is. And this behavior is the same since I first tried switching from Azureus to KTorrent. It didn't changed much. Sometimes it crashes sooner sometimes later. But lately after about 5 minutes the system is frozen.
I'm sorry for not being able to give you more information. But as loong as there won't be some sort of live debugging which saves its output to a file while debugging so I can open the file after the usual reboot I need to do, I don't know how to get more information. Sorry..... :(

You could try using nice or ksysguard to set the priority of the process to very low. That way other processes should have the time to interrupt it.

In ksysguard you need to right click on the process and then select renice process. And you set it to 19, which is the lowest priority you can set (-20 is the highest priority)

Hi!

After posting my problem at the official Archlinux forum somebody mentioned something that might help. I was told that using vfat partitions cause ktorrent to freeze.
Since I don't use vfat partitions I first thought this is not the same thing that causes my problem but after thinking about it again I had the following idea:

Since I'm using reiser4 partitions on my whole system and also on the target disk for saving everything from ktorrent and I have this characteristic sound from my harddrive the moment ktorrent starts to freeze, would it be possible that this problem comes from working on an reiser4 partition and saving data on another reiser4 partition? Could this be the cause of this weird behavior?

Thanks!

Quite possibly, I'm not really sure what the status is of reiser4, but I think it is still in beta.

Seeing that Hans Reiser has been arrested for the murder of his wife, I'm not expecting much progress.

If possible, you should try converting one file system to ext3 or reiser3 and use that as your main download partition.

OK, maybe this works. Reiser4 isn't beta if you ask me. I think up to now it's as stable as reiser3 or ext3.
As for Hans Reiser: I doubt that it's that crystal clear that he is guilty for murder. From what I've read, his wifes new boyfriend drugged her and is also in the SM scene. So I wouldn't be too sure about his guilt. You know when you need somebody to blame you can find anyone who fits the profile. But proofing something like that by evidence isn't that easy. Just because his wife's DNA was at his house.... I mean come on! She's his ex-wife. She brought their kids to him an picked them up over there. Of course her DNA was at his house...
But anyway... The employee from namesys (Reiser's company who also developed the filesystems) made a statement, that the work on reiser4 isn't affected now and thei can continue to work like before. If Reiser guilt is proven they will vote for a new head of the company in order to keep running the company with all the projects. So there wasn't and there isn't any sign for stagnation on reiser4.
I will free one of the partitions in order to check if I'm right. But if it'll work can you guys fix it for running on reiser4 partitions?

Thanks!

I'm not really following the case, wether he did it or not that is for a jury to decide.

I can't try it out on reiser4, got some unpartitioned space left so I can create a partition. But most likely this is a reiser4 problem, seeing that it works fine on ext3, reiser3, and other filesystems. (well, FAT may have some problems with some filenames)

I only followed the whole trial thing from the internet, because I'm using reiser4 on all of my partitions and was worried if reiser4 may be dead....

Meanwhile I used KTorrent on a ext3 partition (Thank god, I had some space left on an old harddisk) and it worked without any error. I'm running Ktorrent since 10 minutes which I've never did before so I guess this is the cause of all my problems with it.
But the strange thing is, that Azureus (which I had to use since KTorrent didn't work) worked like a charm on reiser4. So are you sure that it's only a bug on reiser4? I mean wouldn't Azureus also crash on an reiser4 partition if it would be a filesystem related bug? Maybe this is a stupid question for you, but it ain't for me since I don't know anything about how ktorrent writes files at all. I can only compare to how Azureus behaves and this never happened when using it....
So maybe you can tell me if there's something that can be done within ktorrent before I'm trying to ask people from namesys if they know something about this....
Something tells me thet you guys are way more communicative.

Thanks!!!

If he gets convicted, he will have plenty of time on his hands :-)

That depends on what kind of features azureus uses. We might be using some feature which reiser4 has problems with, and azureus might not be using that.

So you say, that I should let them know that something causes the system to crash whenever KTorrent is saving a file on a reiser4 partition?
As I said, I just want to be sure before sending them a message about a bug which may not be one....

I will contact them when I have tried this myself, I'm the most qualified person to explain to them how KT works.

OK, thank you very very much for your help! I hope this will be fixed soon, so I can use ktorrent instead of the memory wasting Azureus.... ;)

Thanks!
