On my Core Duo laptop with a 5400RPM hard drive, I still consistently notice that the hash checking process is CPU bound, not IO bound. Would it be possible for hash checking to multithread on multi-processor systems?

We were going to speed the hash check up, talking into account the number of CPU cores might not be a bad optimization.

I don't know when we can get to this.
