Greetings,
Despite my wife telling me that bittorrent is not a spectator sport I do find myself peering at the peer display (hur hur) and trying to optimise my download rates by tweaking the number of upload slots...typically on the basis of the number of up/down active torrents and the volume of peers I'm connected to. If, for example, I've a large number of active torrents I tend to use much smaller values for the number of upload slots (perhaps 4ish) compared to the situation where I've a single active torrent (currently this is the case and I'm running 20 upload slots). Whilst I might be dreaming I'm finding that balancing the download rates with upload rates per peer by modifying the number of upload slots tends in general to increase my global download rate - this makes some sense to me since the peers I'm connected to will most likely supply me with an upload slot if I'm sending them data. I'm wondering if it would be relatively easy to configure a cap on upload slots rather than an absolute number, and use an algorithm to dynamically tune the number of slots per torrent? Something along the lines of...if the average download rate per active peer is less than the average upload rate per active peer then increase the number of upload slots by 1. Appreciate your time reading this post - I'd enjoy hearing if this is a viable suggestion. Cheers, Wapcaplit (no relation to Gooseliver and Sprong). |
