The ability to chat with seeders/leechers would be nice. I realize that this isn't a feature you would normally find in any bittorrent client. But it should.

I think the Ktorrent devs need to prioritize working on performance testing and stability of the existing feature set over adding new ones. I care for KT in Ubuntu and we still receive crasher and high CPU usage reports even with latest versions

I never had CPU or crash issues. But it does tend to eat a lot of my ram when doing a lot of torrents. I'm running the latest KT on openSUSE 10.2 from the Packman/Guru repo .

I'm not really sure about that extending torrent's protocol features. If every client add it's own features we will end with mess and incompatibility.

I think the big thing is trying to make sure the client is bug free and making sure it follows the bittorrent protocol. Me personally if I wanted to chat with people I would hop into a chat room. When you start getting a lot of unecessary features it can tend to bloat the program. But this may be a good opportunity to develop a plugin that can use this feature. Then people can load it if they would use it or not load it if they wouldn't.
