Hi, I have a few small questions and suggestions how to fix usability of KTorrent in some areas

1) Tabs
a) What is the use case for "new tab" just after executing Ktorrent? How typical user can use it? It opens only another, second wtab with download list which is useless in my very honest opinion.
New Tab button and Close Tab button are useful only when I also have an open search tab or any groups tab. That is why in my opinion new tab/ close tab/and downloads tab should be hidden by default. Show them only when there is more than one tab opened.

b) Close tab and new tab buttons should by smaller. Oxygen tab buttons in Ktorrent are to width. On the same oxygen style Konqueror buttons look much better. Look here. However, I'm not sure if this look in Konq is 100% correct either. If you want I can ask oxygen guys what is the preffered look for that sort of buttons. :)

2) enqueue/dequeue
Remove it please, it is not easy to use.
This guy had a good idea ->
bassmadrigal wrote:just have priority numbers in the main window, and you just move your torrents up and down based on how you want them to download. f you want to stop one torrent just stop it and then another one will take its place. But it will still have its priority number, so when you start it back up it will stay where it was.

3) search toolbar:
a) Search icon, binocular. Please move it on the left side of Search Text. IMO it is easier to understand what you see if firstly you see icon then input box associated to that icon, not the other way.

b) Change a way to chose an search engine, possible add drop context menu for this. After clicking on this arrow in Search Text searched words are visible. On bottom of this put separator and then "Choose search engine". Clicking on it will give a possibility to change engine. Mockup (without separator, but it should be there) -> Click to see mockup

c) Remove from search tollbar "search engine" and "s.e. label". It is available also in toolbar under search tab. There is no need to duplicate it.

d) Binocular icon in search toolbar is called "search", but in search tab it is called "find". Choose one :)

4) ipfilterplugin:
Ipfilterplugin is turned off but still there is a button in toolbar called "ipfilter." Bug?

5) menu>>edit>>paste
what it is for? Isn't "file" >> "past torrent url" enough? Where and when I can use Edit >> Paste?

6) statusbar,
In my opinion in this application statusbar should by turned off by default. There is enough data about downloads and uploads under tray icon and in main window. So you can hide it by default and make it look less clutter.

Greetings.

I use for tests Ktorrent3.1dev from openSUSE KDE4unstable repository

New tabs are to show different groups in different tabs, look at the groups tab on the side. By clicking on a group it will be displayed in the current tab. You can even open a tab for a group directly by right clicking on it and selecting open tab.

They are probably using some other kind of button.

This is exactly what we do in the queue manager tab. Putting this in the main views, proved to be difficult.

Don't know it seems more natural to me that the search button is below or to the right of the search field. But why not.

b) Change a way to chose an search engine, possible add drop context menu for this. After clicking on this arrow in Search Text searched words are visible. It is not very visible to put it down there. I fail to see the usability improvement in this proposal.

c) Remove from search tollbar "search engine" and "s.e. label". It is available also in toolbar under search tab. There is no need to duplicate it.

Yes there is, suppose you want to search the same thing in another engine. With your proposal you would have to open a new tab, or use your totally hidden away manner of changing the search engine.

d) Binocular icon in search toolbar is called "search", but in search tab it is called "find". Choose one :)

True, this is inconsistent, we will use search everywhere (since that is how we named the plugin)

4) ipfilterplugin:
Ipfilterplugin is turned off but still there is a button in toolbar called "ipfilter." Bug?

No, this is the filter dialog, which is part of KT itself, the plugin only loads blocklists, the actual filtering is done by KT.

5) menu>>edit>>paste
what it is for? Isn't "file" >> "past torrent url" enough? Where and when I can use Edit >> Paste?

You can paste urls of torrents into KT, and KT will open these urls. The paste torrent url in the file menu is going to be renamed to Open URL, it's something on my todo list, which I haven't gotten around to.

6) statusbar,
In my opinion in this application statusbar should by turned off by default. There is enough data about downloads and uploads under tray icon and in main window. So you can hide it by default and make it look less clutter.

How does it clutter ktorrent ?
