I can't reproduce this bug with some steps but usually, when I turn on my computer and start kTorrent sidepanel with groups try to show me whole names of longest groups, which I don't want to see. I think there is two bugs at one time: sidebar forget his width and group names too long.

Because I can't reproduce first bug I suggest you to fix second. :)
I suggest this changes:
1. Running Uploads/Not Running Uploads -> Active/Stopped, same for Downloads. We already have Uploads/Downloads in group name and there is no reason to repeat it again and again. I suggest use Active against Running to fit other group names.
2. Remove group names from subgroup names for all something Uploads/Downloads. Same reason -- we already have group with this name.
3. Queue Manager Controlled -> Queued. Because this name too long.
4. Change order of subgroups in Active and Passive groups. Look at arrows and you understand why. %)

This simple fixes allow to make side panel almost two times much thinner and free space for much more important part of torrent client -- list of torrents.

What isn`t remembered never happened. Memory is merely a record. You just need to rewrite that record.

It seems to me like all variable width UI components will sometimes set their width to that of their longest member. The "Name" column in the mainview and the media player sidebar when you load a file with a long filename (that has only word characters in it) will both also display this behavior.

Hmmm... I think you right. All other sizes drops from time to time too. Just sidepanel's width frustrating me most.

All sizes are restored at startup, so something must have gone wrong with saving them.

Maybe it can happen when you reboot, and KT doesn't have enough time to save them.

I use "make -j4, sudo make install" to install kTorrent from SVN. Maybe some configuration files don't have access from user level? Anyway bug appear only after complete reboot of computer. When I just restart kTorrent all sizes same.

And what you think about group names? Current names really too long.

It can be triggered from minimizing to the tray, so it doesn't have anything to do with saving / restoring at all. I have just assumed it's a KDE bug, although I've only ever noticed it in KTorrent.

You mean this one :

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=157293

We added a workaround for it, but that never really fixed it.

That looks right. I feel like it happens less often than it used to, but I saw it the most with the "Name" column in the main view, and now I rename all my torrents to shorter names so it doesn't expand wildly even when it does happen.
