[Feature Request] tracker inside

Wed Feb 03, 2010 12:27 pm
Hi!

I am using ktorrent regulary - and I am having much fun with it! - Ktorrent has a great concept behind it I think!

Some time ago I started to use bittorrent for private files. Larger files for example that I want to share with friends and colleagues privately. I also wrote a small german HOWTO about Ktorrent and how to use an own tracker for private purposes ( http://wiki.kubuntu-de.org/Kubuntu_benu ... t_Ktorrent ) because I thought that bittorrent is a promising and comfortable way to use for sharing things. - For sure you do not want to share your private photo collections or documents etc. on a big tracker site - at least I have a bad feeling about that ;) But it is not only great for privacy (if you use your own tracker) because there is no sharehoster between, but also very handy because of the self-healing mechanism that does not allow download errors, or for downloading only parts of a folder etc.

Personally I have used the Apache mod_bt module a while as a tracker. The good thing about it is that it is always online if Apache starts (normally automatically if you start your machine). - A tracker that is very easy to use - also for testing purposes is of course bttrack, the tracker that comes with the command line package "bittorrent".

So the only thing I am missing in the moment - but could not find it in Ktorrent - is a built-in tracker module. I was always asking myself why it is not already there... Did I miss anything? Such a module would be handy as it starts with the start of Ktorrent - with serving the content - automatically. It would also make such server easier and more handy and comfortable. It would bring such service to the GUI world that is inhabited by mouse using Desktop users at home/in office.

The module should be able to offer
    * to use the local, internal network
    * to detect the actual public ip address and use it (maybe also update it)
    * to use a given dynamic DNS
    * to offer some statistics - maybe as a webpage like other trackers do
It would be great if there would be a (GUI) mechanism to accept or deny torrents from outside. - Which in fact can be used by others to upload files to your own computer just by using a torrent with your Ktorrent tracker address.

Ktorrent has had the ability to make own torrents like the original bittorrent program has for a long time - maybe since the beginning. But in my eyes the program is not a complete tool without the possibility to serve torrents...

I am still wondering if I have missed anything on this great Ktorrent tool. But I am curious what others think about such a module for it! :)

Thanks for replies! :) - Have fun!

Yes it would be a nice feature, and we already have a functioning http server (web interface plugin), however my time is limited, and I have a lot of other things to do.

Hi George! - Yes, the http-server is already there, true! :)

Thanks for a short answer! - For me personally it works and it will work for lots of others! - Implementing a handy GUI would just be future orientated thing for bittorrent :) I'm pressing thumbs for time management... I did not expect to see this feature immediately ... I was even wondering why I could not find it ... My personal programming skills are awful - I hope that it could be realized in the future as a plugin!

All the best!
