I started a modified version of the streaming chunk selector plugin from this thread with a UI for changing the parameters. With this plug-in the user can easily set the selector to download nearly in-order or with other less then best characteristics for the network as a whole. I don't want to give KTorrent a bad name and potentially get legitimate users banned from trackers even if they are using the built-in selector.
Should I release this plug-in to the public? |

Why would one get banned for in order downloading ?

Some private trackers apparently ban users for not using an approved client, sometimes even a particular set of versions of a client. I suspect this is primarily due to some clients faking upload rates, but in-order downloads might also prevent a client from being approved if the tracker administrator is particularly strict.
Quick list of things that are (theoretically) bad for the network this patch allows the user to set: When to end the "Warm Up" period (Get chunks with most peers (rather then least) period) Close to In-Order Download (leads to many peers with the same set of chunks) Number of peers downloading the same chunk (potentially "wasting" bandwidth but getting critical chunks done sooner) I suppose any open-source client could be made to have this behavior this by any competent developer, this plugin just makes it a bit easier for the average user. Probably just paranoia though. Anyone against me posting the plug-in? |

I'm not opposed, it was on my list of things to do anyway. So lets see what you got, it could be very useful.
