No more tabs in 4.2. Why?!

Wed Mar 07, 2012 9:01 pm
I don't understand why getting rid of the tabs is an improvement. I used the tabs heavily. It makes managing large numbers of torrents much easier. The removal of tabs seems like a huge step backwards to me. Can we at least have them as an option?

I've been using ktorrent for years, and overall, I love it, but this change is making me seriously consider checking out the other torrent clients which are currently out there to see if another one will do the job better.

I agree - for me it's a big part of the way I use ktorrent and helps manage torrents. It's a step backward in my opinion.
I've reverted back to 4.1.3 which was just about perfect, but now I'm worried about security updates. I'm considering changing to deluge because of this. Removing tabs I think was a mistake.

I just reverted my install to 4.1.3 as well... Without the tabs, my torrent list has become infinitely less manageable. The new version is essentially useless for me.

I have been using Ktorrent since its first versions, and I always enjoyed its features, and also its nice integration with KDE. But that was until I installed version 4.2, and realized the tabs are gone. In addition, the torrent names are now in an horrible light green tone, making it difficult to visualize and having no menaning at all at first glance. It doesn't differentiate between finished and unfinished torrents, nor seeded and seedless torrents.

But what really annoys me is the attitude. Developers simply assuming tabs are wrong and useless, without even asking users or making a poll. I'm saying that based on the topic linked above and the bug reports it links to, if there was some type of consensus on removing tabs, could you please at least show some links or documentation?

@dirge, thanks for mentioning deluge, it looks like a nice alternative, I'm also not very fond of reverting to 4.1.3.

If all of this happened in the old days, I would gladly try to get used to it, but if staying with 4.2 means I accept this behaviour from the developers, it's time to move on, after all, that's what FOSS is about, freedom of choice ;)

I know this has been covered at some length, and I know the devs put a lot of excellent work into ktorrent - I've been a user and advocate for many years simply because to my mind ktorrent's been best of breed.

I've read through a few posts here, and the handful of bug reports over at b.k.o. and I'm not entirely sure of The Plan in terms of bringing tabs back as an option. It seems bizarre that two of the three reasons given have been that josephk and George don't like tabs and/or can't look at more than one tab at a time. The other reason George gave - that it makes the code much more difficult to deal with - sounds quite reasonable, but it's still frustrating for those of us in user-land.

One comment on (what looks like) the 'no more tabs' bug report that triggered this change suggested it was an idiotic bug report - and I tend to agree, if only because the reporter assumes that every person currently using (and loving) ktorrent was really annoyed by the tabs, and just hasn't bothered to air that thought out loud .. and is now hugely grateful that finally someone had the guts to demand what we'd all been thinking. This doesn't seem to be the case, as evinced by the number of people complaining about this UI change.

AFAIK this is a very recent change, too - I'm on Debian unstable, and do a big upgrade once a month or so - consequently I've only just got this new version. For the bulk of ktorrent users, who I'm guessing are on testing or stable or LTS or equivalents, they are yet to be affected by this.

FWIW I'll describe how it impacts me - I kept tabs for upload and download (as others evidently did), but mostly my tabs were for separating the handful of private trackers I'm on - consequently I had 5 Custom Groups, and 8 tabs (All, Upload, Download, {Custom Groups}).

When I launched a new torrent I'd select the group from the drop-down box - and pick from the very short list shown.

Now when I launch a new torrent I have 19 (count them - nineteen) of the buggers to scroll through - and *my* groups are always at the bottom of the list. Why I would want to group a new download in the 'Passive Upload' group remains a mystery. But I digress.

As with pretty much all other KDE apps, I keep my toolbar on the left-hand side of the window - it's where I've kept it for ten years, and I like it there. I can't really do this with 4.2 as there's this drop-down group item in the way, which means the toolbar doesn't really work on the left (it makes the toolbar insanely wide). Yes, there are two ways to fix this - shuffle items in the two toolbars around so only the drop-down is in the top, and the other toolbar contains all the icons from both default toolbars - or just remove the drop-down item from the toolbar. Neither is really satisfactory from a usability point of view.

At the moment I'm having to keep Group View open all the time, but this makes for a very wide application window - which in turn makes ktorrent much less usable on my netbook (the tabs were good for small screens as they require less real estate).

Another vote for tabs

Wed Apr 18, 2012 2:19 am
The ability to keep downloads and uploads in separate tabs and to show or hide columns appropriate to each tab made ktorrent 4.1 a joy to use. Seeing the number of torrents on each tab is reassuring and points out immediately when some torrents that should be active, aren't.

I have a very wide screen, but it's not wide enough to show all the columns that need to be displayed when all torrents are lumped together on one screen. And, having to look at irrelevant columns that aren't appropriate to the torrent I'm focusing on is annoying.

Making the code simpler is admirable, but taking out features which provide so much usability just to simplify the code doesn't make sense.

I suppose if 4.1.3 turns out to be the last version of ktorrent I can use, so be it, it's good enough for me.

Sadly, for me this breaks Ktorrent. It's no longer a great / user friendly torrent client.

The tabs were one of my favourite features. With those gone, and the added visual confusion of the new colored torrent names / some bold not bold, the large number of non user-defined groups in the pull down when adding a new torrent - Well, the interface is messy and really not nice anymore. Looking at the new interface / torrent list, it's hard to see what is downloading, already downloaded etc. quickly. The old way was a hundred times better, I really don't understand why the developers would want to make the interface more confusing!

Obviously this is open source, the devs don't have to listen to the users if they don't want to, afterall, they are the ones doing the work, not us.

It's really very sad though, Ktorrent was an amazing torrent client. Time to start looking for a new one. Thanks for suggestion Delgue, may give that a go.
