Which ports should be opened?

Sat Oct 01, 2005 1:11 pm
Hi,

I would like to know if the ports that must be opened are really only 6881 (TCP) and 4444 (UDP), or rather a sequence starting with those (i.e., 6881, 6882, and so on), or something else I haven't thought of ;-).

Thanks for the help!

You may choose whatever ports you want. The defaults are 6881(TCP) and 4444(UDP). KT uses only 2 ports - TCP and UDP, so you don't need any port ranges opened.

Offcourse, if you change the ports make sure they are reachable (if you are behind Firewall or Router).

TCP and UDP ports are used for accepting incoming connections from other clients. If your Firewall is blocking incoming connections to these ports then other clients won't be able to reach you (only outgoing connections will be created(in case your Firewall isn't blocking outgoing too)).

So whatever ports you have selected in KT settings, you need to make sure that your Firewall is not blocking them or you'll need to forward traffic to them if you have a router.

To check if your ports are reachable you may use the following websites (it's for aMule but it'll work with KT (make sure KT is running when performing the test)):

I remember reading that you should open ports like 51000+ for higher DL speeds. I've read it on an Azureus and BitTorrnet forum amongst others. Try it out, and see if you get better DL speeds. I get very ggod speeds, my record using Ktorrent is in the 800's!

A whole 800 bits per second? Whoa!

I fail to see the logic in opening ports higher then 51000 to get better speeds.

Maybe his ISP is filtering ports below 51000. If not, I agree that there's no logic...

Maybe I should not mention that my ISP is doubling download speeds at the end of the month

You know I can use the money I would give to my ISP and pay to get you killed instead?

Make sure you setup a port above 1024 since they are privileged ports for common protocols and or programmes. For the rest go crazy and don't forget to look in the faq section of the tracker.
