Ktorrent Crash with 100 % Cpu usage

Sun Nov 27, 2005 2:18 pm
Hi,

I'm a great fan of the Ktorrent app, and using Ktorrent 1.1 on Kubuntu Breezy (5.10).

This app is really great, but these day it's crashing a lot, without any reason .

After launching it (from 2 seconds to 10 minutes), it uses suddenly about 90 % Cpu and then the GUi freezes and the download stops, on my laptop 1.4 GHz and 768 Mo RAM.

I launched it from console with the option --debug to find out what the problem was, but no error message. The messages in the console freeze too.

I tried to uninstall / reinstall => not better.
Tried to uninstall / install 1.0 official kubuntu version => same problem.
I tried to install 1.1 version with klik => same problem.

I had this problem with a torrent 2 weeks ago, but it seemed to fix by itself (so I thought that the problem came from the torrent I was downloading)

The torrent I have problems with today is a 4.4 Go multifile torrent on which I have selected half of the files (so the download should be about 2.3 Go). Last torrent wasn't that big (no problem with this torrent using Rufus or Azureus, but I would like to only use Ktorrent ...)

Maybe a clue : I noticed that the two torrents I had problem with had a 64-parts chunks, and the other without problems (yesterday) had a 8-parts chunks. I don't know if that could be the solution ?

Ktorrent is crashing sometimes 2 seconds after having launched it, sometimes after 3 or 10 minutes (most ofthe time after 20 seconds, so that's very annoying ...)

Still don't know why, maybe some of you have had the problem and fixed this ?

I keep looking, but please tell me if you ever had this bug and if you found a way to fix this (maybe another .deb version without problems ?)

Regards.

I've had the SVN crash on me once in the same way (and it did something weird where it didn't close all connections so I couldn't just restart it), but yeah...it fixes 99% of the problem.

If you encounter crashes, it would be best if you sent me a backtrace and short description of what happened. Or better, file a bug report.

Ktorrent starts and then hangs

Thu Dec 08, 2005 12:01 am
Ktorrent 1.0
KDE 3.4.3
Linux 2.6.12-9-386
Kubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger)
---------------------------------------
Dell Inspiron 9100
3.2 GHz
512 MB
---------------------------------------
I am able to reproduce the hang each time I open Ktorrent. It hangs after starting the downloads and after about 2-5 minutes of proper functioning.

One complaint I have is that I have yet to be able to use bittorrent to its fullest potential. Every client I use (Windows or Linux) either crashes after starup (Ktorrent), uses so much RAM that all other applications are burdened (Azureus), or the application doesn't run on a Linux install. I am still dubious that the "torrent" actually will enable me to download large files more quickly... at least until I see it on my computer.

I will continue to search for a fix to the Ktorrent freeze or for Linux software that will enable me to download from the torrent without problem. Please post to this thread if you have any update or steps to resolution.
