I'm not sure if sockets count as files and thus are part of the limits.

EDIT: some googling seems to indicate it does.

You can limit the number of connections per torrent in the settings. We cannot just close connections on the fly.

the '895' number above is files only, so the rest should be connections...

I mean connections doesn't seem to be the problem?

I have just found this site because a torrent I tried to download brought up this message.

You don't have to be seeding many torrents. In my case, just downloading one particularly large one was enough to hit this restriction.

The torrents in question are the MAME sets (ROMs for old arcade machines). If you want the torrent file, get "MAME v0.105 roms [Complete]", (free registration required) from http://full.pleasuredome.org.uk/

I don't know the technical solution to this, but bittornado can handle the torrent in the same situation. If it's not too idiotic a suggestion, maybe you could look at how they do it? It seems odd that if a torrent contains a few thousand files KTorrent would need to open them all at once.

Btw, KTorrent is awesome! Thanks!

What version are you running ? Current SVN opens only when necessary, 1.2 keeps all files open all the time.
