Using partial download import to fix bad downloads

Hello,

I downloaded SuSE 10.1 Beta 9 using KTorrent but did not bother to do MD5SUM on the isos. I then used KTorrent for the delta isos for RC1 and wondered why CD 1 and 5 failed. I then did the MD5SUM and found that CD 1 and 5 did not download properly.

I experimented with the Partial Download Import Plugin and found that it will redownload the bad chucks.

1. Under Settings | Configure KTorrent | Plugins in the Main Menu make sure the partfileimportplugin is loaded.
2. Remove the bad download in the main KTorrent window but say no to deleting the incomplete data.
3. Select File | Import Existing Download in the Main Menu.
4. Select the torrent file and data directory of the bad download.
5. Select import on the dialog. KTorrent will go through the files in the data directory and check the chunks.
6. After it is finished and the import dialog goes away, the bad chunks will show up as chunks to download and KTorrent should start to download the chunks to replace the bad chunks.

This is alot better than starting over from scratch to download two CD sized isos.

A big Thank You goes to the developers of the Partial Download Import plugin!

Partial import works nice for rechecking, but it's not made for this task and you'll lose the local stats on the torrent too.
It's made for importing a torrent, which i think is a very nice function to have. (for users new to bittorrent)

For manual recheck we would need a more user friendly solution in the future than this six step thing

The manual recheck is something which I'll do in the next 2 weeks.

Hello,

Thanks George.

I like 1.2 better than 1.1. For some reason with 1.1 my torrent downloading had a tendency to stop because the connections would stop sending data. 1.2 fixed it. I also like the chunks tab because I can get a better idea of what is going on.

I do not know if the bad chunk problem I had was due to KTorrent 1.2 here or if there was a problem at another peer. Using partial download import is not the best solution but it is better than downloading another gigabyte worth of data.

Thanks again for the neat program.
