Troubleshooting sluggish download with Ktorrent

I have converted to Kubuntu some months ago (previously WinXP). I try to select KDE native applications as far as possible.

I have installed KTorrent and I have used it to some extent. In the beginning it worked just fine, but I think that now lately my download speeds seem to be forever slow. I am not very good at the troubleshooting. I used to use Azureus on WinXP and seemed to experience much (factor x10) faster download than what I have been getting on KTorrent lately, so I expect my router and NAT is correctly configured from that.

What other reasons are there for slow download?
- Is it possible I am connected only to peers with low upload capacity? IS it possible to check if this is the cause? In that case, I guess there is nothing I can do about it.
- I have no limit -0- on upload, connections and download, connections - that is alright? I still see that I upload at 10x the speed of the download I get, this is reverse of the ADSL assymetry, and my expereince from using Azureus/early KTorrent career was aalways the opposite.

????I am a bit clueless on how to continue troubleshooting this..please help, it will be appreciated.

EDIT: SYSTEM INFO
Kubuntu 5.10
KTorrent 1.1
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz, 2,5 Gb RAM, ADSL line 6000MBit/s down | 500 MBit up

Typical KTorrent speeds: Down <10 KB/sec Up: 10 to 100 times faster than Down

You should upgrade to KTorrent 1.2 since it is more optimized for speed.

PS. 6000MBit/s down | 500 MBit up
Are you serious? :)

First of all, as stoeptegel said, upgrade to 1.2 that would surely make things better if not solve all issues.

After you upgrade, enable LogViewer plugin and check for "Incoming (S)" messages (they indicate incoming connections). If you don't see any, you might have a problem with firewall/NAT.
You should also see how many seeders/leechers you are connected to in InfoWidget.

BTW, I cannot skip commentary on your ADSL capacity :D
You are sure you didn't type a few '0' more? Ah, some people with 128/64kbps (myself) would kill for a connection like that

  LOL :D
I thought I should hurry up and rush an edit with some system info, i was on my way out of the house to reach the shops before they were closing. Turns out I might have done better without.

Anyway...upgrade to 1.2 - I did not find that version in the kubuntu repositories, does that mean I cannot upgrade? (I am a bit of a linux n00b in fact, in addition to being a permanent n00b on dl speed measurements ;) and a little uncertain why some upgrades are not in the repositories)

Thank you for the advice on Logviewver and infowidget. I'll get to work.

Probably because of old version? I cannot find the Logviewer plugin. But in the infowidget, it says I am connected to 1(6) seeders and 14(52) leechers. That kind of explains the upload to donwload ratio which is currently downloaded 152 Mb, uploaded 1.24 Gb. I might have trouble with some 0 but at least I am not selfish :P

I guess I need to find out why I cannot connect to more seeders, then?

Version 1.2 is not in Kubuntu repository. You can find the package in downloads section of this website - http://ktorrent.org/index.php?page=downloads

Choose your platform, download .deb package and type

sudo dpkg -i package_you_downloaded.deb

This will install latest stable KTorrent and you'll notice many improvements.

Is there a logfile being created that I can review manually?

Yes it's in your ~/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent directory named 'log'.
Did you install v1.2?

Yes installed right now 1.2rc2.
I backed up the old log file, so that I can check for systematic differences in behaviour after 1.2 has been up and running for a little while.

When I restarted the application with new version 1.2, it first copied the file I am downloading as if it was finished. The download statistics showed it was only 5% finished. but it was copied as a full (5.5 Gigabytes....no extra zeroes this time :P) file. :?

It didn't appear plausible that the file should indeed be complete, so I deleted the copy, and download appears to have resumed as if I did not change version or anything. Will check up on the speed later, right now there just isn't enough seeders online to provide useful testing. Thanks for all the help so far, and expect a report on 1.2 performance within the next 24 hrs.:)

version 1.2 has an import plugin for torrents (you might have to enable it in settings though)

Yes installed right now 1.2rc2.

That's a release candidate for v1.2 - so it's a bit older. You should install either
http://ktorrent.org/downloads/1.2/ktorr ... 1_i386.deb - if you have 32bit system, or
http://ktorrent.org/downloads/1.2/ktorr ... _amd64.deb - if you have 64bit system.

Thanks for the hint Ivan. Is it necessary to do a manuall deinstall of the 1.2rc2 when i install the 1.2-1?

I thought rc was a code for some kind of patch :(

EDIT: Nevermind, i tried to do the dpkg -i command and I got a message warning about a downgrade from 1.2rc2-1 to 1.2-1.

I am assuming it is not correct it is a downgrade, but I am also assumung 1.2-1 is now correctly installed. Restarting application.

It's not necessary to uninstall previous version. Just install the new one and ignore that warning message.

Status...I am seeing a slight increase in speed. The torrent itself is probably limiting the dl speed, so i am not really getting a valid speed test. However I do observe the share ratio going down with time, which is a clear indication that speed is going up.
