Inefficient Upload Use?

Tue May 23, 2006 4:27 pm
I use an external system monitor to look at system resource usage. This monitor includes a network monitor.

I've noticed that the upload speeds reported by kTorrent are significantly lower than those reported by my external monitor. kTorrent's reported speeds also fluctuate a great deal more. I am just curious, do I have a flaky network monitor (torsmo), or is ktorrent not using upload bandwidth very efficiently?

Thanks for making such a great client! I love it!

The upload speed reported is only the speed of data. My guess is you are probably seeing lots of incoming and outgoing connection attempts, DHT, protocol overhead ...

And what should be the normal overhead?

The enormous upload was reported before:
http://ktorrent.pwsp.net/forum/viewtopi ... t=overhead
http://ktorrent.pwsp.net/forum/viewtopi ... t=overhead

For example at this moment (2 downloads, 3 uploads) overhead gets up to 70% of averything.

My plan is to deal with this before the final 2.0 release and limit the overhead to a more normal level.

Isn't it possible that the program you're using to count the bandwidth prints the speeds, counts the speed over a longer time than ktorrent?

I'm using GKrellM and the speeds are in KB/s, so there's no difference.
