You have to make sure that your computer running KTorrent, always has the same LAN IP-address. This way you have the guarantee to always be connectable when you boot the computer.

This can be done by:
- configuring the router and computer with a static configuration
- by configuring the computer and router as DHCP (standard on routers these days)
- by using the UPnP plugin in KTorrent without having to forward the ports
- or,and what is the prefered method: using DHCP, but set an extra option in the router to always assign the same ip-address to your LAN machine running KTorrent. (not all routers support this feature)

This last medoth is preferred because you can combine the flexibility of DHCP in your LAN, while keeping one or more computer on a static ip-address.
For this to enable you have to look in the router configuration where it says something like:
* always use the same ip-addres
or
* use mac-adres in DHCP

After that is set, you can just forward the ports in the router which you've set in KTorrent and you're good to go. You can take bittorrent on portforward.com as an example, but use the ports you've assigned KTorrent with.

Hope this helps.

Dont forget the firewall...

  • FIREWALLS:
    I found that it is not just enough to forward the port on your router to the machine that runs ktorrent, but you also have to punch a hole in your firewall on that particular machine (or does the current ktorrent version achieve that by itself? How could it do that anyway without root permission?)

    Yast2 -> Security & Users -> Firewall -> "Permitted services" -> "advanced"

    opens a window with TCP-ports and UDP ports. It is a BLANK separated list for Suse-Yast, commas will mess it up (at least in SUSE 9.x).

    By default, you should open TCP-Port 6881 and UDP Ports 4444 and 6881. The UDP 6881 is ktorrents default for DHT if you use this.

    (I've put "permitted services" and "advanced" in quotes, since my yast displays things in my native language and I do not know the proper english terms.)
  • UPnP:
    Furthermore, I encountered that my Router's UPnP (D-Link Brand) does not work with Ktorrent UPNP Plugin - even after updating the firmware... :(
  • Recognizing success:
    In any way, you know that you've succeeded if you download a torrent and find things like "Authentication (S)" in your log file. The "(S)" is the important part and means that you've accepted an incoming request.
Hope that helps!
