Linux Noober Questions

Mon Jul 24, 2006 12:40 am
Hello forum people,

While Im a bittorrent veteran, I have some rediculous linux noob questions for you:

1. Under what directory should I install KTorrent to make it work best?
2. How do know if I need the i686 or the i586? (detailed instructions--true noob)
3. What is the command to install the .rpm? rpm -i *.rpm ?

Looking forward to much success with you guys.
Much thanks.

or I guess not...
This is what I got:

Matthew:/home/matthew # rpm -U ktorrent-2.0rc1-1.i686.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libgmp.so.3 is needed by ktorrent-2.0rc1-1.i686
Matthew:/home/matthew #

Whats the command line?

My experience with rpm is not much and from the time i tried and failed to turn to linux about 4 years ago with mandrake (mandriva) and suse. So this comes from the book "linux in a nutshell":

rpm -i package_file
to install a new package

rpm -U package_file
to upgrade a package
(if package doesn't already exist on the system, it handles as -i)

rpm -F package_file
to freshen a package
(only upgrade if an older version is present)

Above information should be in
man rpm
as well

This libgmp.so.3 is the encryption library. Search and install it with yum before you rpm the KTorrent package into the system and this should be like a boiled egg on sunday.

586 was the first generation of pentiums, any modern day intel should be able to handle i686

Okay,
So I did this:

matthew@Matthew:~> su
Password:
Matthew:/home/matthew # rpm -i ktorrent-2.0rc1-1.i686.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libgmp.so.3 is needed by ktorrent-2.0rc1-1.i686

I tried to find libgmp for suse 10.1 andnothing so I opened "software management" in YAST and I installed:

gmp The GNU MP Library '
php5-gmp PHP5 Extension Module

Then I ran:
Matthew:/home/matthew # rpm -i ktorrent-2.0rc1-1.i686.rpm
file /opt/kde3/share/mimelnk/application/x-bittorrent.desktop from install of ktorrent-2.0rc1-1 conflicts with file from package kdelibs3-3.5.1-47
Matthew:/home/matthew #

What do I do?

Do you mean:
Matthew:/home/matthew # rpm --replacefiles ktorrent-2.0rc1-1.i686.rpm
or...
Beacause I used the Software Management tool in YAST to install those and I dont know how to do it in the console.

Thanks for your response.

I always use rpm -Uvh ktorrent-2.0rc1-1.i686.rpm

Have done it "forewer" so I don't really remember why anymore, but it handled the install on suse 10.1 nicely.

Strange, I was sure it worked for me. Looks like my memory is not as good as it was, but the output lo looks nice doesn't it :-)

I think you have to drop in an additional --replacefiles, as the previous poster said, or a --force.

Code: Select all
matthew@Matthew:~> su
Password:
Matthew:/home/matthew # rpm -i --replacefiles ktorrent-2.0rc1-1.i686.rpm
Matthew:/home/matthew #

But does that mean its installed? Where is it then?

Looks like it yes.
It should be somewhere in your K-menu, perhaps something like "Internet" like on kubuntu. You can also do alt+f2 and type ktorrent to start almost any app.
