Performance

Tue Jul 25, 2006 4:58 pm
Hello,
Im new to KTorrent and Im wondering if I have the best settings for performance.

Before with Azureus I forwarded my ports through my router and it worked great.

Now Im using UPnP and my download speeds are very inconsistent . They often jump from 20 kb to .5 or 0. They never seem to maintain.

I also went into my router and forwarded 6881, 4444, and 49153 (the one I used in Azureus). Is that helping?

I did have some fast downloads yesterday and today Im downloading less popular stuff. But with 8-10 peers it shouldnt jump between 20kb and 3kb.

I just checked and they were both stalled and UPnP didnt have any of the ports listed.I restarted and now UPnP lists the ports (-4444 for whatever reason)and they're still both stalled.

Whats going on? What should I do?
Im on a laptop with a Linksys BEFW11S4
Thanks in advance
George

The latest. I installed it yesterday. Im pretty sure that its because of the torrents. I think Im downloading from Brazilians with dial-up. Because Parliament is downloading fine.

A refined question then:
Is it better to use UPnP or justconfigure the router?
Another important piece of info is that my broadband co. doesnt allow static IP's.

This happens yes. No client can change anything about the sources.

Well, UPnP *should* be safe, but if there is an exploit (which some companies like to keep secret and not fix...) the whole router is wide open instead of just one port(or maybe more). You can argue if such possible exploit can make UPnP unsafe, but i personally don't trust it and just use NAT.

Bittorrent uses peerid and key in the announce, this way trackers know when a ip address of a peer is changing. IP's don't change that much, and if it is it should make the performence less for only the time to the next announce. So this shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you much.

I think what Ive discovered is that in order to remove all doubt about the router you should plug straight into the modem.

Clever, heh?
